Cycling At The 2000 Summer Olympics – Men's Points Race
The men's points race was an event at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. There were 23 participants from 23 nations competing in the final, which was held on 20 September 2000. Each nation was limited to one cyclist in the event. The event was won by Joan Llaneras of Spain, the nation's first medal in the men's points race. Silver went to Milton Wynants of Uruguay and bronze to Aleksei Markov of Russia; those nations also earned their first medals in the event. Background This was the sixth appearance of the event. It was first held in 1900 and not again until 1984; after that, it was held every Summer Games until 2008 when it was removed from the programme. Dunc Gray Velodrome
The Dunc Gray Velodrome is an Australian velodrome located at Bass Hill approximately 5 kilometres north west of the Sydney suburb of Bankstown. The cycling venue for the 2000 Summer Olympics, the Dunc Gray Velodrome was opened on 28 November 1999 with an opening ceremony which included performances by local talent Darren Sharp and other community groups. The Velodrome is named after Dunc Gray, the first Australian to win a cycling gold medal at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1932. At the time of its construction, the State Government owned the velodrome. Bankstown Council managed the velodrome under a sublease. In 1998, the council sublet the velodrome to Bankstown Sports Club, under a 21-year sublease. The council resumed control of the velodrome in 2019. Juan Curuchet
Juan Esteban Curuchet (born 4 February 1965 in Mar del Plata) is a road bicycle racer and track cyclist from Argentina. Curuchet represented Argentina at the Summer Olympics in 1984, 1988, 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008. He won the madison at the 1999 Pan American Games with his older brother, Gabriel Ovidio Curuchet. He also won the madison at the 2003 Pan American Games and 2007 Pan American Games alongside Walter Pérez and the Cycling World Championships in 2004 (Men's Madison). Curuchet holds an Argentine record of participating in six non-consecutive Olympic games. He closed his Olympic career at age 43, by winning the Men's Madison gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics with Walter Pérez. Jimmi Madsen
Jimmi Madsen (born 4 January 1969) is a Danish former cyclist who raced professionally from 1993 to 2004. He rode for Denmark on the track in four Olympic Games: 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2000. He won the bronze medal in the Men's team pursuit in the 1992 Summer Olympics. Madsen was also part of the Danish squad that took the bronze in the team pursuit at the 1993 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. Christophe Capelle (born 15 August 1967) is a French former racing cyclist. Capelle won a gold medal for France in the 4000-meter team pursuit at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, riding alongside Philippe Ermenault, Jean-Michel Monin, and Francis Moreau. In 2000, he represented France in the points race and Madison events, finishing outside the medals in both events. Capelle also competed in the Olympic road race, but failed to finish. Makoto Iijima
is a Japanese former professional road and track cyclist. Considered one of Japan's most successful cyclists in his decade, Iijima has claimed a total of nine track cycling medals (two golds, three silver, and four bronze) at the Asian Championships, two silvers at the Asian Games (1998 and 2002), and three national time trial titles at the Japanese Championships (1998, 2004, and 2005). Matthew Gilmore (born 11 September 1972 in Ghent) is a Belgian-Australian retired track cyclist, who mostly competed and was most successful on track for Belgium. Although Gilmore was born in and represented Belgium, he is the son of Australian racing cyclist Graeme Gilmore and competed with an Australian licence earlier in his career, changing to Belgium on 15 June 1998. Jon Clay
Jonathan Clay, better known as Jonny Clay (born 26 June 1963) is a British former professional cross-country, track and road racing cyclist. A silver medalist in the individual pursuit at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, Clay was also part of the team pursuit line up which took the bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. After retiring from competitive cycling in 2000, he was appointed British Cycling’s Regional Talent Manager for the North East. Wong Kam Po
Wong Kam-po SBS MH (, born 13 March 1973) is a Hong Kong racing cyclist. A specialist in road bicycle racing, at age 34 he became a track cycling world champion in the scratch race of the 2007 World Championships, which was not his specialty. Wong Kam-po is a five-time Olympian (the most of any Hong Kong athlete) and much-lauded sports icon. James (Jame) Monroe Carney (born November 29, 1968) is an American former professional cyclist. He has made two Olympic Teams ( 1992 Barcelona, Spain and 2000 Sydney, Australia). In 2000, he placed 5th in the 40 kilometer Points Race, currently the best finish by an American in that event. Juan Llaneras
Joan Llaneras Rosselló (born 17 May 1969 in Porreres, Majorca) is a former Spanish World and Olympic points race champion track cyclist. He specialises in the madison and points race events. Llaneras began his cycling career on the road with the ONCE professional cycling team but switched to concentrate on track cycling. Llaneras is a four-time world champion in the points race and three-time champion in the Madison. He is a double Olympic champion, winning the event at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and in Beijing in 2008. Llaneras teamed up with Isaac Gálvez to compete on the lucrative Six Days of Ghent racing circuit in November 2006.
