Cycling At The 1988 Summer Olympics – Men's Points Race
The men's points race was an event at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, for which the final was held on 24 September 1988. There were 34 participants from 34 nations, with 24 cyclists competing in the final. Each nation was limited to 1 cyclist in the event. The event was won by Dan Frost of Denmark, with Leo Peelen of the Netherlands taking silver and Marat Ganeyev of the Soviet Union bronze. It was the first medal in the men's points race for each of the three nations. Background This was the third appearance of the event. It was first held in 1900 and not again until 1984; after that, it was held every Summer Games until 2008 when it was removed from the programme. The women's version was held from 1996 through 2008. Three of the 24 finalists from the 1984 Games returned: silver medalist Uwe Messerschmidt of West Germany, bronze medalist José Youshimatz of Mexico, and fifth-place finisher Juan Curuchet of Argentina. The Seoul Olympic Cyclodrome is a velodrome located at the Olympic Park, Seoul, Olympic Park in Seoul, South Korea. Roland Königshofer
Roland Königshofer (born 24 October 1962) is a retired Austrian cyclist. He won a medal at every UCI Motor-paced World Championships between 1985 and 1994, until the championships were discontinued, either in the amateurs (1985–1992) or professionals category (1993–1994). He also competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics in the 4000 m team pursuit and points race and finished in 16th and 12th place, respectively. His son Lukas Königshofer, Lukas (b. 1989) is a football player. His brother Thomas Königshofer, Thomas is also a retired cyclists; he finished third at the UCI Motor-paced World Championships in 1989 behind Roland. References

Gene Samuel
Eugene "Gene” Samuel (born October 15, 1960) is a semi-retired track cyclist and road cyclist from Trinidad and Tobago, who represented his native country at four consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1984 where he placed fourth, missing the bronze medal by 4/100ths of a second. He won a gold, a silver and a bronze medal in the Men's 1,000m Time Trial at three different Pan American Games. Samuel is a well-known bunch race track cyclist for his never-say-die competitive attitude and his warrior spirit, hence his nickname, "Geronimo". He broke the World Professional record in the 1000 metre time-trial in Cali, Colombia, in 1992. Francisco "Frankie" Andreu (born September 26, 1966) is an American former professional cyclist whose career highlights include riding as team captain of the U.S. Postal Service cycling team in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
