Cycling At The 1976 Summer Olympics – Men's Individual Road Race
The men's individual road race at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, was held on 26 July 1976. There were 134 cyclists from 40 nations starting the race. The maximum number of cyclists per nation was four. Fifty-eight cyclists finished the race. The event was won by Bernt Johansson of Sweden, the nation's first victory in the men's individual road race. Giuseppe Martinelli put Italy back on the podium with his silver; the nation had won gold or silver every Games from 1956 to 1968 but did not medal in 1972. Mieczysław Nowicki's bronze was Poland's first medal in the event. Background This was the 10th appearance of the event, previously held in 1896 and then at every Summer Olympics since 1936. Bernt Johansson
Bernt Harry Johansson (born 18 April 1953) is a Swedish former road bicycle racer, who was a professional rider from 1977 to 1981. His sporting career began with Mariestadcyklisten. A competitor at the 1972 Summer Olympics, he represented his native country once again at the Cycling at the 1976 Summer Olympics, 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where he won the Cycling at the 1976 Summer Olympics – Men's individual road race, men's individual road race. For that performance Johansson was awarded the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal the same year, together with track and field athlete Anders Gärderud, who claimed gold in the men's 3000 m steeplechase in Montreal. Stanisław Szozda
Stanisław Szozda (25 September 1950 – 23 September 2013) was an elite Polish cyclist. He had his best achievements in the 100 km team time trial. In this event he won two silver medals at the 1972 and 1976 Summer Olympics, as well as two gold and two bronze medals at the world championships in 1971, 1973, 1975 and 1977. He was less successful in the individual road race, finishing in 76th and 11th place at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics, respectively, and winning a silver medal at the 1973 UCI Road World Championships. Arie Hassink
Arend Hendrik "Arie" Hassink (born 9 December 1950) is a retired Dutch cyclist who was active between 1969 and 1983. He competed at the 1976 Summer Olympics in the 100 km team time trial and individual road race and finished in 17th and 25th place, respectively. Hassink won the Omloop der Kempen (1971 and 1976), Rund um Köln (1978) and the Olympia's Tour (1977 and 1978); he also won individual stages of the Olympia's Tour in 1972, 1973, 1976 and 1982. Pierre Harvey
Pierre Harvey, (born March 24, 1957) is a Canadian sports athlete. He was the first Canadian male athlete to compete in both the 1984 Summer Olympics (road cycling) and 1984 Winter Olympics ( cross-country skiing). Early life and career Born in Rimouski, Quebec, he won three gold medals in cross-country skiing in the 1979 Canada Winter Games. First competing as a cyclist at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Harvey finished 24th in the individual road race. He was also a silver medallist in the Road Race at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. Competing in cross-country skiing from 1982 to 1988, Harvey's best finish at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships was 16th in the 15 km event at Oslo in 1982. He would earn a total of three victories in his career, including a victory in the 50 km event at the Holmenkollen ski festival in 1988. Aleksandr Dmitriyevich Averin (russian: Алекса́ндр Дми́триевич Аве́рин; born 11 April 1954) is a retired Soviet cyclist.
