Cycling At The 1936 Summer Olympics – Men's Sprint
The men's sprint cycling event at the 1936 Summer Olympics took place on 6 and 7 August and was one of six events at the 1936 Olympics. There were 20 competitors from 20 nations, with each nation limited to one cyclist.Official Report, vol. 2, p. 926. The event was won, in a disputed final, by Toni Merkens of Germany, the nation's first medal in the men's sprint. Arie van Vliet took the silver medal, the fifth consecutive Games that a Dutch cyclist had finished in the top two. Louis Chaillot of France became the first man to win multiple medals in the event, adding a bronze to his 1932 silver; it was the fourth consecutive podium appearance for France. When van Vliet began to overtake Merkens in the first race of the final, Merkens swerved to the right and blatantly interfered with Van Vliet. Ray Hicks (cyclist)
Raymond Hicks (3 March 1917 – 12 January 1974) was a British cyclist. He competed in the sprint and 1km track time trial events at the 1936 Summer Olympics. Cycling career Hicks' first race of his cycling career took place at Chichester, Sussex, on March 1934, where he won a 1-mile handicapped race. Throughout the year, he earned victories in both one and half-mile events. The following year, Hicks earned the National Cyclists' Union London Centre and Southern Counties 1,000-metre sprint titles. In 1936, he was beaten by Dennis Horn during the NCU One Mile Grass Track Championship. Hicks was selected for the sprint and 1km track time trial at the 1936 Summer Olympics, finishing 7th in the latter. He competed in the sprint in the 1937 World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, the following year but was eliminated after a training accident the day before the event. George Robert Bayne Giles (21 December 1913 – 11 July 1973) was a New Zealand track and road cyclist. Haakon Sandtorp
Haakon Sandtorp (22 August 1911 – 9 August 1974) was a Norwegian cyclist who competed in both track and road races. He competed at the 1936 Summer Olympics. He grew up in the street ''Torggata'' in central Oslo, named Kristiania at the time of his birth. Sandtorp's cycling career coincided with Oslo getting a velodrome at Dælenenga idrettspark, with himself, Bernt Evensen and Arnfinn Mortensen competing on the international stage, before the velodrome eventually was demolished. He also raced at the Ordrup velodrome in Denmark. Sandtorp was an eight-time national champion in track cycling, and at the Nordic Championships he won two silver medals and two bronze medals.
