White City Stadium
White City Stadium was a stadium located in White City, London, England. Built for the 1908 Summer Olympics, it hosted the finish of the first modern marathon and other sports like swimming, speedway, boxing, show jumping, athletics, stock car racing, concerts and a match at the 1966 World Cup. From 1927, it was a venue for greyhound racing, hosting the English Greyhound Derby until its closure in 1984. The stadium was demolished in 1985 and the site is now occupied by White City Place. History Designed by the engineer J. J. Webster and completed in 10 months by George Wimpey, on part of the site of the Franco-British Exhibition, this stadium with a seating capacity of 68,000 was opened by King Edward VII on 27 April 1908 after the first stanchion had been placed in position by Lady Desborough on 2 August 1907. Max Götze (13 October 1880 – 29 October 1944) was a German track cycling racer who competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics. He won the silver medal together with his teammates Karl Neumer, Rudolf Katzer, and Hermann Martens in the team pursuit. He also competed in the 5000 metres race, but was eliminated in the first round. In the tandem event together with Otto Götze he was dropped out in the semifinals. Ernest Payne
Ernest Payne (23 December 1884 – 10 September 1961) was an English track cycling racer. Born in Worcester, he won a gold medal in the team pursuit at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London for Great Britain and went on to play football, including two games as an amateur for Manchester United. Background Payne was born in a cottage at Red Hill, Worcester, in 1884 to John Payne, a gardener, and his wife Annie (née Morris). He worked as a carpenter.
