Cy Acosta
Cecilio Acosta Miranda (born 22 November 1946) is a Mexican retired relief pitcher in Major League Baseball who played four seasons for the Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies. Acosta also spend 17 seasons playing in the Mexican League and the Mexican Pacific League. Acosta became the first American League pitcher to make a plate appearance after the introduction of the designated hitter rule in 1973, doing so on 20 June 1973. Career Acosta was born on 22 November 1946 in El Sabino, Guasave Municipality, Sinaloa, Mexico. He made his professional debut in 1966 playing for the Mineros de Fresnillo of the Mexican Central League, a minor league circuit affiliated to the Mexican League, and was promoted in 1968 to the AAA Charros de Jalisco. He played four seasons with the Charros and in 1971 he was signed by the Tucson Toros of the Pacific Coast League. In 1972, Acosta made his MLB debut playing for the Chicago White Sox. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. Tucson Toros
The Tucson Toros were a professional baseball team based in Tucson, Arizona, in the United States. The original Toros were a Triple-A minor league baseball team in the Pacific Coast League from 1969 to 1997, where they won the PCL Championship in 1991 and 1993. They were affiliated with several Major League Baseball teams over the years, most notably with the Houston Astros. The most-recent Toros were created as a new team in the independent Golden Baseball League on September 1, 2008. They were originally the Mesa Miners (2005) and Reno Silver Sox (2006–2008) before being purchased by Tucson Baseball LLC and relocating to Tucson.
