Cuts You Up
"Cuts You Up" is a song by English musician Peter Murphy, released in 1990 as the second single from his third solo studio album, ''Deep'' (1989). The song became Murphy's most successful release, topping the US ''Billboard'' Modern Rock Tracks chart and appearing on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and ''Billboard'' Album Rock Tracks charts. The live versions of the song appear on the B-side of "You're So Close" (1992) single and ''Alive Just for Love'' live album, released in 2001. Background and recording "Cuts You Up" features a melodic violin line over a bed of acoustic guitars, keyboards, percussion, and bass guitar. Peter Murphy described the song as "having a very driving, acoustic quality to it and lots of sort of hooky, melodic overtones to it with a not-so-straight lyric." Peter John Joseph Murphy (born 11 July 1957) is an English singer, songwriter, and musician. He is the vocalist for the post-punk goth rock band Bauhaus. After Bauhaus initially disbanded, Murphy formed Dali's Car with Japan's bassist Mick Karn and released one album, '' The Waking Hour'' (1984). He later went on to release a number of solo albums, including '' Should the World Fail to Fall Apart'' (1986) and ''Love Hysteria'' (1988). In 1990, he achieved mainstream success with his hit single "Cuts You Up", which topped the American Modern Rock Tracks for 7 weeks. His album ''Deep'' also reached No. 44 on the ''Billboard'' 200. Alternative Airplay is a record chart published by the music industry magazine ''Billboard'' that ranks the most-played songs on American modern rock radio stations. Terl Bryant is an English musician. His early career saw him working with US singer/songwriter and filmmaker Steve Taylor and later was in the band of Peter Murphy, the lead singer for Bauhaus. During the 90s he went on to join influential folk-themed progressive band Iona and in 1999 joined former Led Zeppelin bassist and multi-instrumentalist John Paul Jones as part of his trio with Chapman stick player Nick Beggs.
