Curt Silberman
Curt C. Silberman (May 23, 1908 – September 9, 2002) was a German-Jewish and American attorney, community leader, and member of Jewish organizations in both Germany and the United States. Born Kurt Leo Silbermann in Würzburg, Germany, he and his wife Else fled due to the rampant antisemitism of the Nazi era and settled in New Jersey. His legal career in the United States focused on restitution work for the victims of the Nazi government. Silberman was active in many Jewish organizations. He was a co-founder of the Leo Baeck Institute, and for a period of time, the head of American Federation of Jews from Central Europe and a member of the Executive Committee of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany. Thomas Dehler
Thomas Dehler (14 December 1897 – 21 July 1967) was a German politician. He was the Federal Republic of Germany's first List of German justice ministers, Minister of Justice (1949–1953) and chairman of Free Democratic Party (Germany), Free Democratic Party (1954–1957). Early life Dehler was born in Lichtenfels, Bavaria, Lichtenfels in Upper Franconia, Bavaria. After graduating from grammar school in 1916, he fought in World War I. After the war, he studied medicine but soon switched to law and political science, which he studied in Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Munich, University of Freiburg, Freiburg and University of Würzburg, Würzburg. He passed his state examinations in 1920 and 1923, respectively. In 1920, he attained his doctorate with the dissertation "The statement of grounds in penal verdicts". Claims Conference
The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, or Claims Conference, represents the world's Jews in negotiating for compensation and restitution for victims of Nazi persecution and their heirs. According to Section 2(1)(3) of the Property Law of Germany, the claims Conference is a legal successor with respect to the claims not filed on time by Jewish persons. This fact was reasserted in decisions of some lawsuits which attempted to redefine the Claims Conference as a "trustee" of these assets. These lawsuits were dismissed. The Claims Conference administers compensation funds, recovers unclaimed Jewish property, and allocates funds to institutions that provide social welfare services to Holocaust survivors and preserve the memory and lessons of the Holocaust. Leo Baeck Institute, New York
The Leo Baeck Institute New York (LBI) is a research institute in New York City dedicated to the study of German-Jewish history and culture, founded in 1955. It is one of three independent research centers founded by a group of German-speaking Jewish émigrés at a conference in Jerusalem in 1955. The other Leo Baeck institutes are Leo Baeck Institute Jerusalem and Leo Baeck Institute London, and the activities of all three are coordinated by the board of directors of the Leo Baeck Institute. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) is the United States' official memorial to the Holocaust.
