Curt McDowell
Curtis A. McDowell (January 9, 1945 – June 3, 1987) was an American underground filmmaker. Biography McDowell was born in 1945 in Indiana. He moved to San Francisco in the late 1960s to study painting at the San Francisco Art Institute. After switching to the filmmaking program at SFAI, McDowell studied under George Kuchar, who described his footage as the "prolific regurgitations of an 'enfant terrible.'" The two became romantic and artistic partners. McDowell directed the feature film ''Thundercrack!'' in 1975. McDowell died from AIDS on June 3, 1987. He left his work to Robert Evans, who owned the Roxie Theater. After Evans also contracted HIV, he transferred ownership of McDowell's work to friends who established the Curt McDowell Foundation. The Academy Film Archive has preserved a number of Curt McDowell's films, including ''Beaver Fever'', ''Peed into the Wind'', and ''Confessions''. Thundercrack!
''Thundercrack!'' is a 1975 pornographic black comedy horror film written, edited, shot and directed by Curt McDowell, and written by George Kuchar based on a story by McDowell and Mark Ellinger. It stars Marion Eaton, Ken Scudder, Melinda McDowell and George Kuchar. Combining an "old dark house" mystery with hardcore sex scenes, ''Thundercrack!'' is more recently regarded as a cult film. It bears the influences of Jack Smith’s lush, DIY, camp aesthetic, and Nan Goldin’s glimpses of countercultural bohemia. Plot The story begins during a thunderstorm. In the opening shot, the old house called Prairie Blossom is very clearly fake, which lends itself to comedic value. A caller, Willene Cassidy (Maggie Pyle), pays a visit to the house owner, Mrs. Gert Hammond (Marion Eaton), who is very drunk. Roxie Theater
The Roxie Theater, also known as the Roxie Cinema or just The Roxie, is a historic movie theater, founded in 1912, at 3117 16th Street in the Mission District of San Francisco. It is a non-profit community arthouse cinema. History The Roxie is one of the oldest continuously operating movie theaters in the US, with its history tracing back to the early 1900s. The 300-seat theater was renovated in 1933, changed its name to the Roxie, and added its unusual marquee with neon sign but no place for movie titles. In 2003, a 49-seat theater dubbed the Little Roxie opened two doors from the main theater.
