Curling At The Youth Olympic Games
Curling was inducted at the Youth Olympic Games at the inaugural edition in 2012. A total of 16 mixed teams (consisting of two boys and two girls) contested the mixed team tournaments in 2012 and 2016, with this being expanded to 24 teams in 2020. Curling
Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules, and shuffleboard. Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called ''rocks'', across the ice ''curling sheet'' toward the ''house'', a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a ''game''; points are scored for the stones resting closest to the centre of the house at the conclusion of each ''end'', which is completed when both teams have thrown all of their stones once. A game usually consists of eight or ten ends. The player can induce a curved path, described as ''curl'', by causing the stone to slowly rotate as it slides. Tyler N. Tardi (born August 10, 1998 in Richmond, British Columbia) is a Canadian curler originally from Cloverdale, British Columbia. Career Juniors Tardi first came onto the national curling scene skipping the host British Columbia team at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George, British Columbia where he would pick up a bronze medal. After losing in the British Columbia junior finals in both 2013 and 2014, Tardi and his rink of Daniel Wenzek, brother Jordan, Nicholas Meister, and Sterling Middleton won the 2016 British Columbia men's junior championship. The team represented the province at the 2016 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, and went 7-3 after the round robin portion, making the playoffs in third place. Laura Engler (born October 16, 1999) is a Swiss curler from St. Gallen. Career Engler was selected as a member of the Swiss mixed team at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics. Engler threw second stones on the team, which was skipped by Selina Witschonke. The team finished the round robin with a 6–1 record, finishing second in their pool. They then beat Sweden 7–3 in the quarter-finals before dropping the semifinal 7–5 to Canada. They won the bronze medal with an 11–3 defeat over Russia. Cora Farrell (born May 23, 1999) is an American curler from Fairbanks, Alaska. She was a silver medalist at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. Career Farrell has competed in eight consecutive Junior National Championships. Her first was in 2013 at only 13 years old, playing third for Kaitlin Fowler.
