Curiosity (website)
Curiosity was an online education website. The site aggregated content from various online educational and instructional resources (such as courses, articles, and videos), which could be filtered by subjects and topics, course cost, and other factors. History Curiosity was originally founded by Gabe Vehovsky, Discovery Communications chief of digital strategy and digital businesses. He saw Curiosity as a "vertically centric marketplace" for online learning. In November 2014, Curiosity was spun out of Discovery with Vehovsky as CEO; Discovery remains a content partner for the service. At the same time, the company raised $6 million in a Series A funding round from a number of Chicago-based investors, including Pritzker family, Pritzker Group Venture Capital, Origin Ventures, Chicago Ventures, and Corazon Capital. Discovery, Inc. was an American multinational mass media factual television conglomerate based in New York City. Established in 1985, the company operated a group of factual and lifestyle television brands, such as the namesake Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, Science Channel, and TLC. In 2018, the company acquired Scripps Networks Interactive, adding networks such as Food Network, HGTV, and Travel Channel to its portfolio. Since the purchase, Discovery described itself as serving members of "passionate" audiences, and also placed a larger focus on streaming services built around its properties. A series A round (also known as series A financing or series A investment) is the name typically given to a company's first significant round of venture capital financing. The name refers to the class of preferred stock sold to investors in exchange for their investment. It is usually the first series of stock after the common stock and common stock options issued to company founders, employees, friends and family and angel investors. Series A rounds are traditionally a critical stage in the funding of new companies. Series A investors typically purchase 10% to 30% of the company. Curiosity Stream also know as (Curiosity Channel) is an American media company and subscription video streaming service that offers documentary programming including films, series, and TV shows. It was launched in 2015 by the founder of the Discovery Channel, John S. Hendricks. As of 2021, it was reported to have approximately 20 million subscribers worldwide across its direct and bundled platforms. Curiosity Stream produces original documentaries and series including ''Royals: Keeping the Crown'', ''The History of Home'', '' Miniverse'', '' Stephen Hawking's Favorite Places'', ''David Attenborough's Light on Earth'', and '' Deep Time History''; and additionally features content from producers such as the BBC and NHK.
