Curaçao Museum
The Curaçao Museum (Dutch: ''Curaçaosch Museum'', Papiamentu: ''Museo di Kòrsou'') is an art and cultural history museum in Curaçao. The museum opened on 7 March 1948, and is the oldest museum in Curaçao which still exists. The museum is located in the former military hospital. History In 1946, the Curaçao Museum Foundation was established by Chris Engels to create a museum about the art and cultural history of the Netherlands Antilles which was partially funded by the government and by the Curaçaoan community who raised ƒ 80,000 for the project. The museum was opened in 1948 in the former military quarantine hospital Mundo Nobo. The buildings date from 1853 and have been redesigned between 1951 and 1953 to form one complex. Otrobanda
Otrobanda is one of the historic quarters of Willemstad, located at the southwest side of the city, in Curaçao. Otrobanda was founded in 1707, and has been designated a Unesco World Heritage Site. History Otrobanda was founded in 1707 as a suburb of Willemstad on the other side of the Sint Anna Bay. Otrobanda was often referred to as the Spanish side, and Punda and Pietermaai were called the Holland side. In 1752, In 1816, the population of Otrobanda was 2,527 people. In 1856, the Sint-Elisabeth Hospital, the first hospital of the country, was opened in Otrobanda. In 2019, it was replaced by Curaçao Medical Center which built next to the old hospital. the Basilica of St. Anne was built as the first Roman Catholic church on the island. The district saw a rapid population increase up in the early 19th century when the once walled city of Willemstad became overpopulated. Jan Sluyters
Johannes Carolus Bernardus (Jan) Sluijters, or Sluyters (17 December 1881 in 's-Hertogenbosch – 8 May 1957 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch painter and co-founder of the Moderne Kunstkring. Sluijters (in English often spelled "Sluyters") was a leading pioneer of various post-impressionist movements in the Netherlands. He experimented with several styles, including fauvism and cubism, finally settling on a colorful expressionism. His paintings feature nude studies, portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. His work was part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1928 Summer Olympics. Edgar Fernhout
Edgar Richard Johannes Fernhout (August 17, 1912 - 4 November 1974) was a Dutch painter. Life Fernhout was born in Bergen, North Holland. He was the son of the artist Annie Caroline Pontifex "Charley" Toorop and the philosopher Henk Fernhout. Like his mother and grandfather, Jan Toorop, he was mainly working as a painter. He married Rachel Louise Pellekaan, draftsman, but no children were born from this marriage. After divorce, in 1947 he married Nannette Salomonson, from this marriage one son was born. The youth of Eddy Fernhout was far from harmonious. His parents had a bad marriage, and by constant financial problems, the family could not afford a permanent residence.
