Curator Of The White House
The White House Office of the Curator is charged with the conservation and study of the collection of fine art, furniture and decorative objects used to furnish both the public and private rooms of the White House as an official residence and as an accredited historic house museum. The office began in 1961 during the administration of President John F. Kennedy while First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy oversaw the restoration of the White House. The office is located in the ground floor of the White House Executive Residence. The office, headed by the curator of the White House, includes an associate curator, an assistant curator, and a curatorial assistant. The office works with the chief usher, the Committee for the Preservation of the White House and the White House Historical Association. Lorraine Waxman Pearce
Lorraine Waxman Pearce, sometimes known as Lorraine Pearce, (April 14, 1934-March 14, 2017) was a decorative arts scholar and the inaugural White House art curator, key to the Kennedy restoration of the White House. Subsequent to her hiring by Jacqueline Kennedy in 1961, Pearce wrote the first guide that covered the White House's historic furnishings, which included George Washington's mirror, a chair from Lincoln's bedroom, a sofa attributed to Dolley Madison and items from John Tyler. Pearce was a 1955 graduate of City College of New York and received her master's in early American culture from the Winterthur Program, a partnership between the Winterthur Museum and the University of Delaware. While at Winterthur where she worked as a registrar, she became known for her scholarship on the French impact on American arts. Rex Wayne Scouten (September 16, 1924 – February 20, 2013) was the White House Chief Usher from 1969 to 1986, and White House Curator from 1986 to 1997. Born in Snover, Michigan, Scouten served in the United States Army during World War II. He graduated from Michigan State University. From 1949 to 1960, he served in the United States Secret Service. As such he served as Secret Service protection for Vice President Nixon from 1953 through 1957, and then worked at the White House. From 1960 to 1969, he was an assistant White House usher.
