Cumbernauld East (ward)
Cumbernauld East is one of the twenty-one Wards and electoral divisions of the United Kingdom, wards used to elect members of the North Lanarkshire Council. It currently elects four councillors. It was created in 2007 as Abronhill, Kildrum and the Village, covering those neighbourhoods within the town of Cumbernauld: Abronhill, Kildrum and Cumbernauld Village, The Village, returning three members. A 2017 boundary change led to the name being altered to a more general geographic description due to the town centre commercial area and the Seafar neighbourhood (excepting the McGregor Road area) being added, the electorate increasing sufficiently to return an additional councillor. In 2019, the ward had a population of 16,570. North Lanarkshire ( sco, North Lanrikshire; gd, Siorrachd Lannraig a Tuath) is one of 32 council areas of Scotland. It borders the northeast of the City of Glasgow and contains many of Glasgow's suburbs and commuter towns and villages. It also borders East Dunbartonshire, Falkirk (council area), Falkirk, Stirling (council area), Stirling, South Lanarkshire and West Lothian. The council covers parts of the shires of Scotland, traditional counties of Dunbartonshire, Lanarkshire and Stirlingshire. Cumbernauld
Cumbernauld (; gd, Comar nan Allt, meeting of the streams) is a large town in the historic county of Dunbartonshire and council area of North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is the tenth most-populous locality in Scotland and the most populated town in North Lanarkshire, positioned in the centre of Scotland's Central Belt. Geographically, Cumbernauld sits between east and west, being on the Scottish watershed between the Forth and the Clyde; however, it is culturally more weighted towards Glasgow and the New Town's planners aimed to fill 80% of its houses from Scotland's largest city to reduce housing pressure there. Traces of Roman occupation are still visible, for example at Westerwood and, less conspicuously, north of the M80 where the legionaries surfaced the Via Flavii, later called the "Auld Cley Road". Abronhill
Abronhill () is an area in the north-east of Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It extends from Cumbernauld Town Centre. Abronhill was planned with its own shopping centre and has three primary schools, along with several churches. Abronhill has 41 streets. Abronhill, and particularly the now-demolished Abronhill High School, (shut down in 2014 with secondary pupils now attending Cumbernauld Academy), were used extensively as the filming location for Bill Forsyth's 1981 film ''Gregory's Girl'' and its sequel ''Gregory's Two Girls''. All of the roads in the older part of Abronhill were named after a tree for example Cedar Road or Oak Road. Kildrum
Kildrum was the first area to be constructed in Cumbernauld new town, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It provided housing for the workers at the Burroughs factory at Old Inns, the first factory in Cumbernauld New Town. The main road is in the shape of an arc with residential streets leading from it. Inside the arc are ex-corporation houses and there is better quality, mostly private, housing on the outside. The street names of Kildrum are taken from places associated with Robert Burns. Facilities include Cumbernauld High School, primary school, special school, health centre, YMCA, four shops, hairdressers, chemist, three churches/chapels, Salvation Army. Kildrum's history did not begin with the new town since as far back as 1 October 1310 Robert the Bruce wrote to Edward II of England from Kildrum trying, unsuccessfully, to establish peace between Scotland and England. Cumbernauld Village
Cumbernauld Village (often referred to locally as just ''the Village'') is an area of Cumbernauld. Whilst Cumbernauld was designated a new town in 1955, the Village itself has a pre-mediaeval history, with a Roman settlement being built in the area due to its proximity to the Antonine Wall. After the Roman period the settlement remained and grew to such an extent that the Comyn family built their chapel there. It is recorded that, in 1500, the Black Death led to a special plea from the surviving people of Cumbernauld to the church authorities in Glasgow to allow them to establish their own cemetery rather than taking all their dead to St. Ninian's in Kirkintilloch. This source is also quoted in "Excavations at 3-11 Main Street, Cumbernauld". The villagers were granted permission to do so, and used the ground at the existing Comyns' chapel which dates from the end of the 12th century. Seafar
Seafar is an area of the town of Cumbernauld. The original Seafar sand pit and farm were in the middle of what is now the A8011. Early in the new town's history Seafar was more distinct from Ravenswood and Muirhead than it now is possibly due to the building schedule and signage on paths. Recently Seafar is more dominant, perhaps because neither Ravenswood nor Muirhead appear on road signs. Seafar is south of the M80 motorway and is bordered by Seafar wood, planted at the time of the construction of the town. The area was the second built in the new town of Cumbernauld, its many streets are named after famous Scottish artists and writers. St Mary's is its local Roman Catholic primary school. Seafar Primary School was demolished and replaced by sheltered housing in 2004. 2007 North Lanarkshire Council Election
Elections to North Lanarkshire Council were held on 3 May 2007, the same day as the other Scottish local government elections and the Scottish Parliament general election. The election was the first one using 20 new wards created as a result of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, each ward will elect three or four councillors using the single transferable vote system a form of proportional representation. The new wards replace 70 single-member wards which used the plurality (first past the post) system of election. Labour managed to retain control of the council, something which the party failed to do in many other parts of Scotland. Overall they lost 14 seats, most of which went to the Scottish National Party, although the individual seats won by the Conservative Party and the Scottish Liberal Democrats were noteworthy in that these parties had never been represented on North Lanarkshire Council before. Scottish Labour ( gd, Pàrtaidh Làbarach na h-Alba, sco, Scots Labour Pairty; officially the Scottish Labour Party) is a social democratic political party in Scotland. 2012 North Lanarkshire Council Election
Elections to North Lanarkshire Council were held on 3 May 2012 on the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. The election used the twenty wards created under the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, with 70 Councillors being elected. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. The election saw Labour retain their traditional position as the largest party on the Council as they gained 1 seat from 2007 and retained their overall majority. The Scottish National Party also increased their representation and remained in second place on the authority with 3 net gains. Both the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party and the Scottish Liberal Democrats were wiped out losing their single Council seats.
