All 46 members of Cumberland Council, a unitary authority in England, are elected every four years. Political control The first election to the council was held in 2022, initially operating as a "shadow authority" until 1 April 2023 when the new council came into effect and took over the functions of the abolished Cumbria County Council and the three district councils of Allerdale Borough Council, Carlisle City Council and Copeland Borough Council. Political control of the council since 2023 has been held by the following parties: Leadership Political leadership is provided by the leader of the council. Cumberland Council
Cumberland Council is the local authority for Cumberland in England. It is a unitary authority, the structural change order names the new Cumberland Council as only a district council. It will operate as a shadow authority until taking up its powers in 2023. Cumberland Council will replace Cumbria County Council, Allerdale Borough Council, Carlisle City Council and Copeland Borough Council. History The council was created as part of the 2019–2023 structural changes to local government in England. Branding The council logo was approved at a meeting of the shadow executive on 20 July 2022. The logo draws on symbols found on the flag and coat of arms the traditional county of Cumberland. It features a Parnassus flower, the traditional county flower, wavy lines which represent the fells, mountains, lakes and coast of the council area and the colours blue and green, which are the livery colours of the traditional county. Allerdale
Allerdale is a non-metropolitan district of Cumbria, England, with borough status. Its council is based in Workington and the borough has a population of 93,492 according to the 2001 census, increasing to 96,422 at the 2011 Census. The Borough of Allerdale was formed under the Local Government Act 1972, on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the municipal borough of Workington, the urban districts of Maryport, Cockermouth and Keswick; and the rural districts of Cockermouth and Wigton, all of which were within the administrative county of Cumberland. In 1995 Allerdale was granted borough status. The name derives from the ancient region of Allerdale, represented latterly by the two wards of Cumberland, called Allerdale-above-Derwent and Allerdale-below-Derwent, the present borough corresponding largely to the latter with parts of the former.
