Culcheth Railway Station
Culcheth railway station served the village of Culcheth, Lancashire, England. It was west of the bridge where Wigshaw Lane crossed the railway. History Culcheth station opened on 1 April 1884 along with six other stations on the Wigan Junction Railways (WJR), which was backed by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (MS&LR). The Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway changed its name in 1897 to the Great Central Railway (GCR). The GCR absorbed the WJR on 1 January 1906. The WJR line ran through Lancashire from Glazebrook West Junction to Wigan Centralbut was also a part of the bigger MS&LR/GCR network and therefore trains were originally provided by the MS&LR. Services In April 1884 there were seven trains in each direction per day, all running between Manchester Central railway station and Wigan Central. Of these six called at Culcheth. Culcheth is a village in the Borough of Warrington, ceremonial county of Cheshire and historic county of Lancashire, England, six miles (10 km) north-east of Warrington town centre; it is the principal settlement in Culcheth and Glazebury civil parish. Culcheth is primarily residential, with a large village green at its heart where the annual Community Day is held. The old railway line is now known as Culcheth Linear Park. Culcheth Linear Park is a park in the district of Culcheth, Warrington, England. Like the Black Bear Park and sections of the Trans Pennine Trail, Culcheth Linear Park is built on former railway tracks. This park lies on a section of the former Wigan Junction Railways. The line was first opened to goods in 1878 and was later connected to , , , and . At the outbreak of World War II lines were connected to the Royal Naval Aircraft Training Establishment at Culcheth (HMS ''Ariel'') and the ROF Risley, Royal Ordnance Factory at Risley. Hindley South railway station served the communities of Hindley and Platt Bridge, south-east of Wigan, England. Location and nearby stations The station was on the Wigan Junction Railways line, known locally as the "Wigan Central line", which ran from Wigan Central to Glazebrook.
