Cub Records
Cub Records was an American record label, and a subsidiary of MGM Records, which started in 1958 for rhythm and blues releases. Artists who released records on Cub included the Impalas (" Sorry (I Ran All the Way Home)"), Jimmy Jones (" Handy Man", " Good Timin'"), the Stereos (" I Really Love You"), and Jimmy Velvit ("Sometimes At Night", "We Belong Together"). The label lasted until 1968. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc., also known as Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and abbreviated as MGM, is an American film, television production, distribution and media company owned by amazon (company), Amazon through MGM Holdings, founded on April 17, 1924 and based in Beverly Hills, California. MGM was formed by Marcus Loew by combining Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures, and Louis B. Mayer Productions, Louis B. Mayer Pictures into one company. It hired a number of well known actors as contract players—its slogan was "more stars than there are in heaven"—and soon became Hollywood's most prestigious film studio, producing popular musical films and winning many Academy Awards. The Stereos
The Stereos were an American pop/rock/ doo-wop group from Steubenville, Ohio. They began as The Buckeyes around 1955 with members Bruce Robinson and Ronnie Collins, and released two singles on the Cincinnati label Deluxe Records in 1957. In 1959, the group added Leroy Swearingen and released their first single as The Stereos, "A Love for Only You"; it flopped, and Swearingen left the group to be replaced by Nathaniel Hicks. Swearingen, however, wrote the song " I Really Love You", which became their biggest hit, peaking at number 15 on the U.S. Black Singles chart and number 29 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. "We Belong Together" is a 1958 American rhythm and blues hit written and recorded by Robert & Johnny, with a co-writing credit to Hy Weiss. It reached #12 on the R&B charts and #32 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart. Cover versions The song was later recorded by several others. The Fleetwoods released a version on their 1959 album, ''Mr. Blue.'' A rendition by Ritchie Valens was released in 1959 on the Del-Fi record label and can be found on several of his albums. It is also featured in a scene from the 1987 hit film about Valens, '' La Bamba'' in which the song was sung by Los Lobos. The Belmonts released a remake on the Laurie label, Laurie 3080, in 1961, after they had split with Dion. It was not a hit, but was later reissued on a collector's label because of its musical value. James Mullins (born January 11, 1941), better known as Jimmy Velvit, is an American rock and roll singer, who began his career in the 1960s. He is originally from Coalgate, Oklahoma, later from Dallas, Texas. He is best known for recording a white rhythm and blues version, in 1962, of Robert & Johnny's 1958 hit "We Belong Together". Velvit's first release was "Sometimes at Night" on Division Records in 1961, afterwards released on Cub Records (a division of M-G-M). He also recorded under the name 'James Bell', in 1968, when he charted "He Ain't Country", a Country & Western release, for Bell Records. In 2001, his album ''Sun Sea and Sand'' (Seduction SCD-103) was nominated for a Grammy Award. Velvit was still recording and performing . "I Really Love You" is a song written by Leroy Swearingen, and originally recorded by his Steubenville, Ohio, vocal group called The StereosThe Stereosat Allmusic in 1961. Background The lead singer on the original recording was Ronnie Collins. This song featured the percussion sounds of people walking in rhythm, first heard in the introduction, as well as between the verses and the Bridge section, and finally heard in the outro before the song's fade. MGM Records
MGM Records was a record label founded by the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio in 1946 for the purpose of releasing soundtrack recordings (later LP albums) of their musical films. It transitioned into a pop music label that continued into the 1970s. The company also released soundtrack albums of the music for some of their non-musical films as well, and on rare occasions, cast albums of off-Broadway musicals such as ''The Fantasticks'' and the 1954 revival of ''The Threepenny Opera''. In one instance, MGM Records released the highly successful soundtrack album of a film made by another studio, Columbia Pictures's ''Born Free'' (1966). "Handy Man" is a song written by singer Jimmy Jones and songwriter Otis Blackwell. Recordings by Del Shannon and also The Sparks Of Rhythm list Charles Merenstein as a co-writer, as does BMI. The Sparks Of Rhythm version on the Apollo 541 single version released in 1959 credits Andrew Barksdale and Merenstein as writers omitting Jimmy Jones. The song is noted for Jones singing "Come-a, come-a come-a come-a, come come-a, yeah" lyrics, which are heard at the beginning as well as in the coda of the song, before the song's fade. It was originally recorded by The Sparks Of Rhythm, a group Jones had been a member of when he wrote it, although he was not with them when they recorded it. Jimmy Jones (singer)
James Jones (June 2, 1930 – August 2, 2012) was an American singer-songwriter who moved to New York City while a teenager. According to Allmusic journalist Steve Huey, "best known for his 1960 R&B smash, ' Handy Man', Jones sang in a smooth yet soulful falsetto modeled on the likes of Clyde McPhatter and Sam Cooke." Career Jones was born in Birmingham, Alabama. His first job in the entertainment industry was as a tap dancer. He joined a doo-wop group named the Berliners in 1954. They later changed their name to Sparks of Rhythm. In 1955 Jones co-wrote " Handy Man", which was recorded by the Sparks of Rhythm in 1956 (after Jones left the group). After recording with other groups, Jones went solo and, in 1959, teamed up with Otis Blackwell who reworked "Handy Man" which Jones recorded on the MGM subsidiary Cub Records.
