''Crystal Silence'' is an album by vibraphonist Gary Burton and pianist Chick Corea. It was recorded in November 1972 and produced by Manfred Eicher for ECM Records. Their collaboration continued in 1979 with the albums ''Duet'' and ''In Concert, Zürich, October 28, 1979'', also on ECM Records. Nearly 30 years later they followed up this album with ''The New Crystal Silence'' in 2008, this time on Concord Records. The New Crystal Silence
''The New Crystal Silence'' is a 2008 live jazz album by pianist Chick Corea and vibraphonist Gary Burton. It was released in a two-disc set. The first disc was recorded on May 10 and 12, 2007, at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall. The second disc was recorded on July 7, 2007, at Bjornsonhuset in Molde, Norway, except for the track "Señor Mouse", which was recorded July 13, 2007, at the Auditorio de Tenerife in Canary Island, Spain. Reception The album peaked number 11 on the ''Billboard'' Top Jazz album charts and also won the Grammy awards for the Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group. Gary Burton (born January 23, 1943) is an American jazz vibraphonist, composer, and educator. Burton developed a pianistic style of four-mallet technique as an alternative to the prevailing two-mallet technique. Michael Gibbs (composer)
Michael Clement Irving Gibbs (born 25 September 1937) is a Rhodesian-born English jazz composer, conductor, arranger and producer as well as a trombonist and keyboardist. He is known for collaborations with vibraphonist Gary Burton, his student, and for his use of rock elements in orchestral jazz. Career Gibbs was born in Harare, Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). He moved to Boston, Massachusetts, United States in 1959, in order to study at the Berklee College of Music and Boston Conservatory. In 1961, Gibbs took scholarships at the Lennox School of Jazz and later at Tanglewood Music Center. Initially returning to Rhodesia, Gibbs later settled in England. After recording with Graham Collier, John Dankworth, Kenny Wheeler and Mike Westbrook in the late 1960s, Gibbs released his first album, ''Michael Gibbs'', in 1970. Steve Swallow (born October 4, 1940) is an American jazz bassist and composer, known for his collaborations with Jimmy Giuffre, Gary Burton, and Carla Bley. He was one of the first jazz double bassists to switch entirely to electric bass guitar. Biography Born in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, United States, Swallow studied piano and trumpet, as a child, before turning to the double bass at age 14. While attending a prep school, he began trying his hand in jazz improvisation. In 1960, he left Yale University, where he was studying composition, and settled in New York City, playing at the time in Jimmy Giuffre's trio along with Paul Bley. After joining Art Farmer's quartet in 1963, Swallow began to write. It is in the 1960s that his long-term association with Gary Burton's various bands began. ''In Concert, Zürich, October 28, 1979'' is a live double album by pianist Chick Corea and vibraphonist Gary Burton recorded at the Limmathaus in Zürich and released on ECM the following year—the duo's third release for the label, following ''Crystal Silence'' (1973) and ''Duet'' (1979). Technical details ''In Concert'' was recorded live, as the title suggests, and released in 1980 as a double LP set. The original release contains 10 tracks with a total length of 79:59. The album was subsequently reissued on a single CD and in the process shortened to 8 tracks for a length of 61:16. ''The Penguin Guide to Jazz'' is a reference work containing an encyclopedic directory of jazz recordings on CD which were (at the time of publication) currently available in Europe or the United States. The first nine editions were compiled by Richard Cook and Brian Morton, two chroniclers of jazz resident in the United Kingdom.
