Cryer's Crackers
''Cryer's Crackers'' was a television panel show for Yorkshire Television. It was hosted by Barry Cryer. The show ran for eight shows in 1994 and was recommissioned for two more series, in 1995 and 1996. Teams of celebrities had to compete to identify news clips that were rescued from 25 years of television archives. Popular comedians Norman Collier and Duggie Brown were the programme's regular team captains and guests included Brown's sister Lynne Perrie and television presenter Richard Whiteley John Richard Whiteley (28 December 1943 – 26 June 2005) was an English presenter, and journalist, best known for his twenty-three years as host of the game show ''Countdown''. Barry Cryer
Barry Charles Cryer (23 March 1935 – 25 January 2022) was an English writer, comedian, and actor. As well as performing on stage, radio and television, Cryer wrote for many performers including Dave Allen, Stanley Baxter, Jack Benny, Rory Bremner, George Burns, Jasper Carrott, Tommy Cooper, Ronnie Corbett, Les Dawson, Dick Emery, Kenny Everett, Bruce Forsyth, David Frost, Bob Hope, Frankie Howerd, Richard Pryor, Spike Milligan, Mike Yarwood, ''The Two Ronnies'' and Morecambe and Wise. Early life Cryer was born in Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, to John Cryer, an accountant, who died when Barry was five, and his wife, Jean. After an education at Leeds Grammar School, he began studying English literature at the University of Leeds. He later described himself as a university dropout: "I was supposed to be studying English Literature at Leeds, but I was in the bar and chasing girls and my first-year results showed it. Norman Collier
Norman Collier (25 December 1925 – 14 March 2013) was a British comedian who achieved popularity following television appearances in the 1970s. He was best known for his 'faulty microphone' routine and for his chicken impressions. Career and reputation Collier was born in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, into the working-class family of Thomas and Mary (née Dowling) Collier on Christmas Day, 1925, weighing 15 lb 4 oz. He grew up in the centre of Hull as the eldest of eight children. At age 17, Collier joined the Royal Navy and served as a gunner towards the end of the Second World War. After being demobilised he found work as a labourer. In 1948, while he was visiting Hull's Perth Street West club, an act failed to turn up, and Collier volunteered to fill in. Duggie Brown
Duggie Brown (born Barry Douglas Dudley; 7 August 1940 – 16 August 2022) was an English comedian and actor. He was the younger brother of actress and singer Lynne Perrie. Stage work During the early 1960s, Brown was a guitarist/vocalist in a four-piece group called the "Kool Katz." Brown was a cabaret artist who also appeared on Granada Television's popular series '' The Comedians''. In 2012, ''The Comedians'' celebrated forty years with the release of a DVD, ''The Original Comedians LIVE – 40th Anniversary Show'', recorded live during a summer gig in 2011 held at the Blackpool Grand theatre. The DVD featured new performances from Brown, along with Stan Boardman, Roy Walker and Mick Miller. Lynne Perrie
Lynne Perrie (born Jean Dudley; 7 April 1931 – 24 March 2006) was an English actress, singer and television personality, best known as Mrs Casper in Ken Loach's 1969 film '' Kes'', Mrs Petty in the television series '' Queenie's Castle'', and as Ivy Tilsley in ''Coronation Street''. Early life Perrie was the second of four children; a brother, Victor, died before she was born. Her younger brother was actor Duggie Brown. Perrie attended Rotherham Girls High School after passing her 11-plus. After leaving school, she trained as a dispenser at Boots. She later abandoned her studies to concentrate on her singing career. By the age of 14, she had started singing in working men's clubs under the stage name of 'Dizzy' with a local dance band for six shillings (6/-) (30p) on a Saturday night.
