Crows Landing Naval Auxiliary Air Station
NASA Crows Landing Airport is a private use airport owned by the NASA Ames Research Center, northwest of the central business district of Crows Landing, in Stanislaus County, California, United States. The airfield was formerly named Naval Auxiliary Landing Field Crows Landing or NALF Crows Landing when operated by the U.S. Navy. As of January 2011 Airport-data.com reports this airport status as closed permanently. In late 1942, the Crows Landing airfield was operated as an auxiliary air station to Naval Air Station, Alameda, and was used to train Navy fighter pilots. Pilots of F4F Wildcats, TBF and TBM Avengers trained here first in Link and Panoramic trainers, then eventually in actual planes. Later, pilots in R4D Skytrains and R5D Skymasters (Navy versions of the Army's C-47 and C-54) trained here. After the war the station was placed in caretaker status. NASA Facilities
There are NASA facilities across the United States and around the world. NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC provides overall guidance and political leadership to the agency. There are 10 NASA field centers, which provide leadership for and execution of NASA's work. All other facilities fall under the leadership of at least one of these field centers. Camp Kearny
Camp Kearny was a U.S. military base (first Army, later Navy) in San Diego County, California, on the site of the current Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. It operated from 1917 to 1946. The base was named in honor of Brigadier General Stephen W. Kearny. History Establishment and early years The camp was established by the Army in 1917 on of land on a mesa north of San Diego. The area included the Miramar Ranch, which had originally been established by newspaperman E. W. Scripps and later sold to the Jessop family. The Consolidated PB4Y-2 Privateer is an American World War II and Korean War era patrol bomber of the United States Navy derived from the Consolidated B-24 Liberator. Naval Auxiliary Air Station Vernalis
Naval Auxiliary Air Station Vernalis was a United States Navy facility located in the small town of Vernalis, California during World War II. It opened on June 8, 1943, and closed on October 15, 1945. History It served as an auxiliary station to Naval Air Station Alameda. It also housed German prisoners of war during World War II. The site is located northeast of the intersection of Gaffery Road and Koster Road. The Navy used the 160 acre Vernalis Bombing Target, located roughly 4.4 miles southwest of the Air Station, as a dive bombing range. The air base also supported the nearby Hammond General Hospital. On the 4000-foot runway, Seabees installed a catapult and arresting gear for aircraft carrier training. NAS Alameda
Naval Air Station Alameda (NAS Alameda) was a United States Navy Naval Air Station in Alameda, California, on San Francisco Bay. NAS Alameda had two runways: 13–31 measuring and 07-25 measuring .
