Crowley County Correctional Facility
The Crowley County Correctional Facility is a medium-security, privately owned and operated state prison for men located in Olney Springs, Crowley County, Colorado. CoreCivic runs it under contract with the Colorado Department of Corrections. The facility was constructed by Dominion Correctional Services of Oklahoma, and opened in 1998. It was first operated by Correctional Services Corporation. After a riot in 1999, Dominion assumed direct operations itself. It was purchased by Corrections Corporation of America in 2002 and subsequently expanded. It houses 1,894 Colorado state inmates in medium security. Description A post office called Olney Springs has been in operation since 1909. The town was named after one Mr. Olney, a railroad official. Geography Olney Springs is located in southwestern Crowley County at (38.165844, -103.945723). Colorado State Highway 96 leads east to Ordway, the county seat, and west to Pueblo. Crowley County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 census, the population was 5,922. The county seat is Ordway. History Crowley County was created by the Colorado legislature on May 29, 1911, out of the northern portions of Otero County. Previously both were parts of Bent County. The county was named for John H. Crowley, senator from Otero County to the state legislature at the time of the split. Its original inhabitants decades earlier were Native Americans, more Cheyenne than other tribes at the time the western expansion of the U.S. arrived. Correctional Services Corporation (CSC), originally Esmor Correctional Corporation, was a correctional firm founded by James F. Slattery in 1987. It was located in Sarasota, Florida, USA, and traded on the NASDAQ (NASDAQ NMS:CSCQ). The Wyoming Department of Corrections (WDOC) is a state agency of Wyoming that operates adult correctional facilities. It is headquartered in Suite 100 of the 1934 Wyott Drive building in Cheyenne. History Wyoming entered the Union in 1890. As a territory, inmates were held at the Wyoming Territorial Prison at Laramie. Work began for a state prison at Rawlins in 1888, but the facility did not open until 1901. The building had 104 cells and housed both male and female inmates. In 1909, female inmates were transported to Colorado to serve their sentences. In 1950 an additional wing was added that featured running water and solitary confinement cells.
