Crowley, Malheur County, Oregon
Crowley is an unincorporated community in Malheur County, Oregon, United States. It lies along Crowley Road, north of Oregon Route 78, about east of Crane. Crowley Ranch and Crowley Ranch Airstrip are nearby. Crowley Creek was named for Green Berry Crowley who settled on its banks with his son James in 1874. The Crowleys' home was burned in 1878 during the Bannock War but the family escaped. Crowley post office was established in 1911 and ran until 1935. Crowley, Polk County, Oregon
Crowley is an unincorporated community in Polk County, Oregon, United States. It is located east of Oregon Route 99W, about four miles north of Rickreall. Crowley was a station on the Southern Pacific Railroad between Derry and McCoy, established in 1892 as "Crowleys" and named for Solomon Kimsey Crowley. Crowley, who was born in Missouri in 1833, came west in 1852 and settled in the Oak Grove area of Polk County in 1855. The "s" was dropped from the name of the station in 1898. The rail line is now owned by the Portland and Western Railroad, but Crowley is no longer a station. The Crowley post office operated intermittently from 1881 to 1904. Bannock War
The Bannock War of 1878 was an armed conflict between the U.S. military and Bannock and Paiute warriors in Idaho and northeastern Oregon from June to August 1878. The Bannock totaled about 600 to 800 in 1870 because of other Shoshone peoples being included with Bannock numbers. they were led by Chief Buffalo Horn, who was killed in action on June 8, 1878. After his death, Chief Egan led the Bannocks. He and some of his warriors were killed in July by a Umatilla party that entered his camp in subterfuge. The U.S. military, consisting of the 21st Infantry Regiment and volunteers, was led by Brigadier General Oliver O. Howard. Nearby states also sent militias to the region. The conflict ended in August and September 1878, when the remaining scattered Bannock-Paiute forces surrendered; many returned to Fort Hall Reservation. Yarmouth is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States, twelve miles north of the state's largest city, Portland. When originally settled in 1636, as North Yarmouth, it was part of Massachusetts, and remained as such for 213 years. Crane is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Harney County, Oregon, United States, northeast of Malheur Lake on Oregon Route 78. Its population was 129 at the 2010 census. History Crane was named for the prominent local features Crane Creek and Crane Creek Gap. Crane Creek Gap is the pass between the Harney Basin and the drainage basin of the South Fork Malheur River. Crane Creek is probably named for the sandhill crane, which was once abundant in eastern Oregon. Crane post office was established in 1895 and discontinued in 1903.
