Diederich Franz Leonhard Von Schlechtendal
Diederich Franz Leonhard von Schlechtendal (27 November 1794, Xanten – 12 October 1866, Halle) was a German botanist. He studied in Berlin, in 1819 becoming curator of the Royal Herbarium. He was a professor of botany and director of the Botanical Gardens at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg from 1833 until his death in 1866. The genus '' Schlechtendalia'' (Asteraceae), from Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, was named in his honor. He was editor of the botanical journal ''Linnaea'' (from 1826), and with Hugo von Mohl (1805-1872), was publisher of the ''Botanischen Zeitung'' (from 1843). He conducted important investigations of the then largely unknown flora of Mexico, carried out in conjunction with Adelbert von Chamisso (1781-1838), and based on specimens collected by Christian Julius Wilhelm Schiede (1798-1836) and Ferdinand Deppe (1794-1861). Clerodane diterpenes, sometimes referred to as clerodane diterpenoids, are a large group of secondary metabolites that have been isolated from several hundreds of different plant species, as well as fungi, bacteria and marine sponges. They are bicyclic terpenes that contain 20 carbons and a decalin core. Classification The clerodane diterpenes are classified into four groups ''trans''-''cis'' (TC), ''trans''-trans (TT), ''cis''-''cis'' (CC), and ''cis''-''trans'' (TC) based on the relative stereochemistry at the decalin junction (''trans'' or ''cis'') and the relative stereochemistry of the substituents at C-8 and C-9 (''trans'' or ''cis''). ''Croton'' is an extensive flowering plant genus in the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. The plants of this genus were described and introduced to Europeans by Georg Eberhard Rumphius. The common names for this genus are rushfoil and croton, but the latter also refers to ''Codiaeum variegatum''. The generic name comes from the Greek ('), which means "tick" and refers to the shape of the seeds of certain species. Description ''Croton'' is a diverse and complex taxonomic group of plants ranging from herbs and shrubs to trees. A well-known member of this genus is '' Croton tiglium'', a shrub native to Southeast Asia. It was first mentioned in European literature by Cristóbal Acosta in 1578 as lignum pavanae. The oil, used in herbal medicine as a violent purgative, is extracted from its seeds. Currently, it is considered unsafe and it is no longer listed in the pharmacopeias of many countries. Flora is all the plant life present in a particular region or time, generally the naturally occurring (indigenous) native plants.
