New Croton Reservoir
The New Croton Reservoir is a reservoir in Westchester County, New York, part of the New York City water supply system lying approximately north of New York City. It is the collecting point for water from all reservoirs in the Croton Watershed. History In 1842 the Croton River, a tributary of the Hudson River, was impounded by the Old Croton Dam to create Croton Lake. New York City's first source of water beyond its city limits, its waters traveled by aqueduct to the Croton Distributing Reservoir in midtown Manhattan. In 1900, the workers (primarily Italian immigrants, Irish immigrants and African-Americans) constructing the dam went on strike to protest unfair wages. The workers were paid the standard wage for incredibly hard and dangerous work. The New York State National Guard was called in to protect replacement workers and violence ensued. Croton Point
Croton Point Park is a Westchester County park in the village of Croton-on-Hudson. The park has several public attractions including a miniature aircraft airport, boat launch, tent and RV camping, cabin rental, cross-country skiing, fishing, group picnicking, hiking and walking trails, a museum, nature study, pavilions, a playground, swimming, and a beach. History In the 1800s the Underhill family owned the land that is now Croton Point Park. Grapes, watermelons, and apples were grown. A brickyard was also on the property. A few buildings built with these bricks are still standing at Croton Point. The park is also home to several historic sites such as a set of wine cellars from an old manor. A substantial portion of the land on which the park is situated today was the site of a landfill, which was operated by the Westchester County government from 1927 to 1986. Muscoot Reservoir
The Muscoot Reservoir is a reservoir in the New York City water supply system in northern Westchester County, New York, located directly north of the village of Katonah. Part of the system's Croton Watershed, it is 25 miles (40 kilometres) north of the City. History The reservoir was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century. It was formed by the damming of the upper half of the Croton Riverby. The reservoir was completed in 1905. During construction, the New York Central Railroad moved Bridge L-158 from the Rondout Creek near Kingston to carry its Mahopac Branch across a section of the reservoir near Goldens Bridge. It remains today although service on the branch ended in 1960. In 1978, the reservoir was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the only remaining double-intersection Whipple truss railroad bridge in the state. Muscoot River
The Muscoot River is a short tributary of the Croton River in Putnam and Westchester counties in the state of New York. Approximately long and running north-to-south, it lies within the Croton River watershed and is part of the New York City water supply system's Croton Watershed. Path The rivers headwaters flow southwards from gates at Kirk Lake, a controlled lake in the New York City water supply system, and Lake Mahopac, lying near one-another in the Putnam County hamlet of Mahopac, New York in the Town of Carmel. About two miles south the flow of Secor Brook joins in, an outfall from Lake Secor to the northwest. After trending slightly southeast for a bit over three miles the Muscoot drains into the Amawalk Reservoir in the town of Somers, crossing about midway along its length into Westchester County. Croton Falls Reservoir
The Croton Falls Reservoir is a reservoir in the New York City water supply system in the Putnam County, New York townships of Carmel, and Southeast, roughly north of New York City. Part of the system's Croton Watershed, it was formed by impounding the West Branch and Middle Branch of the Croton River, tributaries of the Croton River, which flows into the Hudson River. Placed into service in 1911, the resulting reservoir has a drainage basin of 16 square miles (25.6 km²) and can hold of water at full capacity. This includes all bodies of water that flow into the reservoir except for other reservoirs. Water sources in the basin include Michaels Brook, and Lake Gilead, one of three controlled lakes in the Croton Watershed. The East Branch Croton River is a tributary of the Croton River in Dutchess, Putnam, and Westchester counties in the state of New York. It lies within the Croton River watershed and is part of the New York City water supply system's Croton Watershed. Path The river rises in the town of Pawling in Dutchess County, flowing west and then south through the village of Pawling. It crosses into Putnam County, flowing through the Great Swamp in the town of Patterson. The Middle Branch Croton River is a tributary of the Croton River in Putnam and Westchester counties in the state of New York. It lies within the Croton River watershed and is part of the New York City water supply system's Croton Watershed. Path The rivers headwater is a small pond at the intersection of Horsepound Road and NY State Route 52 about one mile north of the hamlet of Lake Carmel in the far central eastern part of the town of Kent in Putnam County. It is shortly joined by a small stream, then runs into manmade '' Lake Carmel'', one of the few sizable bodies of water in the Croton River watershed that is not part of the New York City water supply system. The West Branch Croton River is a tributary of the Croton River in Putnam and Westchester counties in the state of New York. It lies within the Croton River watershed and is part of the New York City water supply system's Croton Watershed. Path The rivers headwaters drain into Sagamore Lake in the northwest part of the town of Kent in Putnam County. From there the West Branch flows southeast one mile into Boyds Corner Reservoir, where it joins the New York City water supply system. From Boyd's Corners it flows into West Branch Reservoir in the town of Carmel, New York.
