Cross-country Skiing At The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2007
Cross-country skiing was one of the three disciplines of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2007, held between February 22 and March 4, 2007 in Sapporo, Japan. The sprint events were held at the Sapporo Dome and the distance races were held at the Shirahatayama Open Stadium. The distances and skiing styles were unchanged from Oberstdorf, and as in 2005, nine different nations won medals. However, France and Canada were without medals this time around, replaced by Belarus, who won their first medal ever through 19-year-old Leanid Karneyenka, and Slovenia, for whom Petra Majdič won silver on the very first day of the Championships. Norway took the most medals: twelve medals of a possible 36, with five of twelve golds, despite falling in the men's team sprint where the Norwegians were defending champions. FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2007
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 took place 22 February – 4 March 2007 in Sapporo, Japan. It was the second time this city has hosted these championships, having previously done so in the 1972 Winter Olympics. Sapporo was selected as venue by vote at the 43rd FIS World Congress in Portorož, Slovenia, on 6 June 2002. It also marked the third time the championships were hosted outside Europe in a year that did not coincide with the Winter Olympics; it was the first championship held in Asia. The ski jumping team normal hill event was not held, as it had been in 2005. Vasily Rochev (skier, Born 1980)
Vasily Vasilyevich Rochev (russian: Василий Васильевич Рочев; born 23 October 1980 in Syktyvkar, Komi ASSR, Russian SFSR) is a Russian cross-country skier who has competed since 2000. He won the bronze medal in the Team sprint event at the 2006 Winter Olympics at Turin. Rochev has four medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships with a gold (Individual sprint: 2005), two silvers (Team sprint and 4x10 km: both 2007), and one bronze (4x10 km: 2005). Tor Arne Hetland
Tor Arne Hetland (born 12 January 1974) is a Norwegian cross-country skiing coach and a former professional cross-country skier. Hetland was born in Stavanger. He now lives in Trondheim. While active he represented Byåsen IL ski club. He was coached by Ulf Morten Aune. Hetland is and (). World Cup career Hetland began his career in 1990, but only started competing in the World Cup in 1996/97, where he finished 11th in the long distance standings and 46th in the sprint, finishing 30th in the overall standings. Tore Ruud Hofstad
Tore Ruud Hofstad (born 9 August 1979) is a Norwegian former cross-country skier who competed from 1998 to 2010. A freestyle specialist, Hofstad is best noted as a member of the Norwegian relay team during three successful FIS Nordic World Ski Championship campaigns. In total, Hofstad won four gold medals in the World Ski Championships; 4 × 10 km relay in 2003, 2005 and 2009 and team sprint in 2005. Hofstad won n additional two World Championship medals; one silver in the 20 km double pursuit in 2003 and a bronze medal on the 15 km freestyle in 2005. Hofstad has eight individual victories from 2001 to 2005 and presently skis for Lillehammer SK. Odd-Bjørn Hjelmeset (born 6 December 1971 in Nordfjordeid) is a Norwegian former cross-country skier who competed from 1993 to 2012. A classical technique specialist, Hjelmeset's biggest success is the gold medal in the 50 km event at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo. At the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships he won eight medals (all in the classical style). This includes five gold medals (50 km: 2007, 4 × 10 km relay: 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009) and three bronze medals (1999: 10 km, 2001: 15 km, and 2005: 50 km). Eldar Rønning (born 11 June 1982 in Levanger) is a Norwegian former cross-country skier. He skis with the Skogn IL club, in Nord-Trøndelag. Career In 2004/05, he achieved three podium finishes in World Cup Sprint events, including a win at Reit im Winkl. He finished the season in 10th, 235 points behind overall winner Axel Teichmann. He was 62nd in the distance standings, 520 points behind Teichmann, and came second in the sprint discipline, 237 points behind fellow countryman Tor Arne Hetland. Jens Arne Svartedal (born February 14, 1976) is a Norwegian former cross-country skier who competed in the World Cup between 1999 and 2010. He represented Trøsken IL from Sarpsborg in Norway. His greatest achievement is winning the individual sprint gold medal at the 2007 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Sapporo. Thobias Fredriksson (born 4 April 1975 in Dals Rostock, Dalsland) is a Swedish former cross-country skier who competed since 2000. He won two medals at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin with a gold in the team sprint and a bronze in the individual sprint events. Fredriksson also won two medals in the individual sprint events at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships with a gold in 2003 and a bronze in 2005. After the 2010 season, Fredriksson retired.
