The Women's 5 kilometre cross-country skiing event was part of the cross-country skiing programme at the 1994 Winter Olympics, in Lillehammer, Norway. It was the ninth appearance of the event. Competitive cross-country skiing encompasses a variety of race formats and course lengths. Rules of cross-country skiing are sanctioned by the International Ski Federation and by various national organizations. International competitions include the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, the FIS Cross-Country World Cup, and at the Winter Olympic Games. Such races occur over homologated, groomed courses designed to support classic (in-track) and freestyle events, where the skiers may employ skate skiing. It also encompasses cross-country ski marathon events, sanctioned by the Worldloppet Ski Federation, and cross-country ski orienteering events, sanctioned by the International Orienteering Federation. Nina Vasilyevna Gavrylyuk (russian: Ни́на Васи́льевна Гаврылю́к; born 13 April 1965) is a former Soviet (until 1991) and Russian cross-country skier who competed from 1987 to 2003. Born in Leningrad, she won four medals at the Winter Olympics with three golds (4 × 5 km relay: 1988, 1994, 1998) and one bronze (15 km: 1994). In Soviet time she trained at VSS Trud in Leningrad. Gavrylyuk's biggest success was at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, where she earned eleven medals. Gabriella Paruzzi
Gabriella Paruzzi (born 21 June 1969 in Udine) is a retired Italian cross-country skier who competed from 1991 to 2006 and formerly skied with the G.S. Forestale. She skied in World Cup events, and won the Women's Overall World Cup in 2004. Equipment She was sponsored by Rossignol, and skied with Rossignol X-IUM skis for both skate and classic disciplines. Her boots were also named Rossignol X-IUM's, and the bindings are Rottefella R3's. Sophie Villeneuve (born 6 November 1969) is a French cross-country skier who competed from 1991 to 1999. Competing in three Winter Olympics, her best career finish was fifth in the 4 × 5 km relay at Albertville in 1992 while her best individual finish was ninth in the 15 km event at Lillehammer in 1994.
