Cross-country Skiing At The 1984 Winter Olympics – Women's 10 Kilometre
The 10 kilometre cross-country skiing event was the first event cross-country skiing programme to take place at the 1984 Winter Olympics, in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. It was the ninth appearance of the 10 km race. The competition was held on Thursday, February 9, 1984 at Veliko Polje, Igman and was the first final to be held at the games. Marja-Liisa Hämäläinen of Finland took Gold and was the second Finn to win this event after Lydia Wideman in 1952. The 1976 gold medal winner, Raisa Smetanina, won silver. All 52 athletes who entered the race finished with an official time. Cross-country Skiing (sport)
Competitive cross-country skiing encompasses a variety of race formats and course lengths. Rules of cross-country skiing are sanctioned by the International Ski Federation and by various national organizations. International competitions include the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, the FIS Cross-Country World Cup, and at the Winter Olympic Games. Such races occur over homologated, groomed courses designed to support classic (in-track) and freestyle events, where the skiers may employ skate skiing. It also encompasses cross-country ski marathon events, sanctioned by the Worldloppet Ski Federation, and cross-country ski orienteering events, sanctioned by the International Orienteering Federation. Marie Risby
Marie Risby (born 20 April 1955) is a Swedish cross-country skier who competed during the 1970s and 80's. She participated in three Winter Olympics (1976, 1980 and 1984) and did her best results at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, when she finished fourth in the 5 km, fifth in the 20 km, fifth in the 4 × 5 km relay, and sixth in the 10 km events. At the 1985 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld, Risby finished sixth in the 20 km and tenth in the 10 km events. Pirkko Määttä
Pirkko Sisko Määttä (born 7 March 1959) is a Finnish former cross-country skier who was born in Kuusamo and competed from 1982 to 1995. She won two 4 × 5 km relay bronze medals (1984, 1988) at the Winter Olympics. Määttä won a complete set of medals at the 1989 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships with a gold in the 4 × 5 km relay, a silver in the 10 km classical, and a bronze in the 15 km. Petra Rohrmann (born 30 July 1962 in Zella-Mehlis, Bezirk Suhl) is an East Germany, East German cross-country skiing (sport), cross-country skier who competed from 1983 to 1984. At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, she finished eighth in the 4 × 5 km relay and had her best individual finish was 17th in the 10 km event at those same games. Guidina Dal Sasso (born 16 January 1958) is an Italian cross-country skier and mountain runner who competed from 1982 to 2002. Her best World Cup finish was fourth twice, earning one each in 1985 and 1986. In 1985 she came third in the World Mountain Running Championships, and was a member of the winning team.
