Cross-country Skiing At The 1980 Winter Olympics – Men's 15 Kilometre
The men's 15 kilometre cross-country skiing competition at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, United States, was held on Sunday 17 February at the Mount Van Hoevenberg in Essex County, New York. Favourites Józef Łuszczek of Poland was the 1978 World champion and Nikolay Bazhukov of the Soviet Union was the defending champion from the 1976 Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. The Race Each skier started at half a minute intervals, skiing the entire 15 kilometre course. The race developed into the closest duel in the history of cross-country skiing. Thomas Wassberg of Sweden and Finnish veteran Juha Mieto fought a tight battle for the gold medal. Wassberg started last of the 63 participants, half a minute behind Norwegian Ove Aunli. Mount Van Hoevenberg
Mount Van Hoevenberg is a summit point located in the Adirondack Mountains in the Town of North Elba, Essex County, New York, 9 miles (15 km) east-southeast of the village of Lake Placid. Named for Henry Van Hoevenberg (1849–1918) (not to be confused with the American football player Henry Van Hoevenberg), it is best known for the location of the bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track, and of a network of cross-country ski trails. Nikolay Semyonovich Zimyatov (russian: Николай Семёнович Зимятов; born 28 June 1955), is a Soviet and Russian cross-country skier. He was the first man in the sport to win three gold medals at a single Winter Olympics, in the 30 km, 50 km and 4 × 10 km relay at the 1980 Lake Placid Games. Sven-Erik Danielsson (born 10 February 1960) is a Swedish cross-country skier who competed from 1982 to 1998. His best World Cup finish was fourth in a 15 km event at West Germany in 1983. Benny Kohlberg (born 17 April 1954 in Arvika, Värmland) is a retired Swedish cross-country skier who competed during the 1980s. He won a gold medal in the 4 × 10 km relay at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. Kohlberg's best individual finish was third at a World Cup competition in 1982 in Switzerland. William Conrad Koch (born June 7, 1955) is an American cross-country skier who competed at the international level. A native of Guilford, Vermont, he is a graduate of the nearby Putney School in Putney. In 1974, he became the first American to win a medal in international competition, placing third in the European junior championships. Biography Koch was born in Brattleboro, Vermont, to Fred and Nancy Koch. His father lived on investments from a major corporation. His parents divorced, and, in 1965, when his mother became remarried to the then president of Marlboro College, Koch lived with the new family. Vasily Pavlovich Rochev (russian: Васи́лий Па́влович Рочев) (born 22 December 1951 in the village of Bakur, Izhemsky District, Komi ASSR) is a former Soviet/Russian cross-country skier who competed in the 1970s and early 1980s, training at Dynamo in Syktyvkar. Lars Erik Eriksen (born 29 December 1954) is a retired Norwegian cross-country skier who competed in multiple events at the 1980 and 1984 Olympics and 1978 and 1982 World Championships. He had his best achievements in the 4 × 10 km relay, winning a bronze in 1978, a silver in 1980 and a gold in 1982, and finishing in fourth place at the 1984 Olympic Games. Oddvar Brå (born 16 March 1951) is a Norwegian former cross-country skier. He was among the best skiers in Norway, the three-times winner of the World Cup (1972–73, then named "World ranking", 1974–75 and 1978–79) and the winner of 16 national championships. His success in the major international championships was more modest. Career Brå participated in the 1972 Winter Olympics and the 1991 Holmenkollen ski festival, but his first individual major international win was at the 1982 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo, where he won the 15 km event. Harri Tapani Kirvesniemi (born 10 May 1958, in Mikkeli) is a Finnish former cross-country skier who competed from 1980 to 2001. During his career he won six Olympic medals (all bronzes), and also the 50 km event at the Holmenkollen ski festival in 2000. He retired after being caught doping at the 2001 World Championship in Lahti.
