Cropthorne New Inn Section
Cropthorne New Inn Section is a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Cropthorne in Worcestershire. It is a Geological Conservation Review site. The site dates to the Ipswichian interglacial ( Marine Isotope Stage 5e) between 130,000 and 115,000 years ago. This was one of the warmest periods of the last half a million years, but there were no humans in Britain. The site has a rich array of mollusc and mammal fossils, including hippopotamus. There are a number of terraces of the River Avon laid down at different periods, and New Inn is a key site for determining their sequence, and for the Pleistocene stratigraphy of the Midlands generally. There is no public access to the site, which is a triangular area of scrub north of Main Road near the New Inn. Worcestershire ( , ; written abbreviation: Worcs) is a county in the West Midlands of England. Cropthorne
Cropthorne is a village and civil parish in Worcestershire, England within the Vale of Evesham, and on the North-west edge of the Cotswolds. It is approximately southeast of Worcester, north of Cheltenham, and southwest of Stratford-upon-Avon. Cropthorne has a population of 603, in 237 households (2001 census). Located on a small ridge overlooking the River Avon, its ancient orchards sweep down to the river and offer clear, unbroken views across the vale to the Malvern Hills in the distance. It is featured in the Domesday Book, and St Michael's Church dates back to the 12th century. The church is a Grade I listed building. The Geological Conservation Review (GCR) is produced by the UK's Joint Nature Conservation Committee and is designed to identify those sites of national and international importance needed to show all the key scientific elements of the geological and geomorphological features of Britain. These sites display sediments, rocks, minerals, fossils, and features of the landscape that make a special contribution to an understanding and appreciation of Earth science and the geological history of Britain, which stretches back more than three billion years. Marine Isotope Stage 5 or MIS 5 is a marine isotope stage in the geologic temperature record, between 130,000 and 80,000 years ago. Sub-stage MIS 5e, called the Eemian or Ipswichian, covers the last major interglacial period before the Holocene, which extends to the present day. River Avon, Warwickshire
The River Avon () in central England flows generally southwestwards and is a major left-bank tributary of the River Severn, of which it is the easternmost. It is also known as the Warwickshire Avon or Shakespeare's Avon, to distinguish it from several other rivers of the same name in the United Kingdom. This is a list of the Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) in Worcestershire, England. In England the body responsible for designating SSSIs is Natural England, which chooses a site because of its fauna, flora, geological or physiographical features. , there are 106 sites designated in this Area of Search. There are 15 sites with a geological interest, and 106 listed for biological interest. Five sites are designated for both reasons.
