Catharine (Kate) McGill Crooks Smart or Kate Crooks (February 13, 1833 – March 23, 1871) was a botanist and member of the Botanical Society of Canada. Her pressed botanical specimens were displayed in London, England at the 1862 International Exhibition, International Exhibition of 1862, and her botanical records were cited in the ''Catalogue of Canadian Plants''; published as part of the Geological Survey of Canada. She was a member of the Crooks family, a prominent family of merchants, industrialists, civil servants, politicians, and landowners in the nineteenth-century British colony of Upper Canada. William Crooks (6 April 1852 – 5 June 1921) was a noted trade unionist and politician from Poplar, London, and a member of the Fabian Society. He is particularly remembered for his campaigning work against poverty and inequality. Early life Born in Shirbutt Street, Poplar, Crooks was the third son of a ship's stoker, George Crooks, who lost his arm in an accident when Crooks was three years old. His mother, Caroline Elizabeth (née Coates), then supported the family by working as a seamstress, but money was scarce and five of the children were temporarily forced to enter Poplar workhouse in 1861. This experience had a profound influence on Crooks' views on poverty. Educated at a local poor law school, Crooks worked initially as a grocer's errand boy, then a blacksmith's labourer and then as an apprentice cooper. Timothy John Crooks (born 12 May 1949) is a former British rower who competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics and the 1976 Summer Olympics. He was seven times winner at Henley Royal Regatta and won the Wingfield Sculls three times. Rowing career Crooks was educated at Radley College and raced in the World Youth Championships in 1967. He won the Thames Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta in 1968 competing for Leander Club, then won Silver Goblets in 1971 competing for Leander Club and partnering Glyn Locke. He raced in the 1971 World Rowing Championships in the coxless pair, then in 1972 switched to the double scull with Patrick Delafield, winning the Double Sculls Challenge Cup at Henley and the double sculls with Delafield, at the inaugural 1972 National Rowing Championships. Samuel Dickinson Crooks (16 January 1908 – 3 February 1981) was an English footballer who played as outside forward or outside right for Derby County in the mid-war era. He was one of the best-known footballers of the 1920s and 1930s and was capped 26 times by England. Early life Crooks was born at Bearpark, County Durham, one of a family of 17 children. After leaving school, he worked in the coal-mines and played for the colliery team and then for Tow Law Town in his spare time until problems with rheumatism forced him to abandon his career underground. When his health was restored he joined Durham City in June 1926 and made 16 appearances for them in the Third Division (North). Richard Alexander Crooks (June 26, 1900 – September 29, 1972) was an American tenor and a leading singer at the New York Metropolitan Opera. Biography He was born the second son of Alexander and Elizabeth Crooks on June 26, 1900 in Trenton, New Jersey and attended Trenton Central High School. Following several concert seasons as an oratorio and song recital specialist, including the American premier of Mahler's ''Das Lied von der Erde'', he traveled to Germany where he made his operatic debut in Hamburg as Cavaradossi in Puccini's ''Tosca'' in 1927. After his tour in other European cities such as Berlin, Crooks returned to the US and made his American debut in 1930 in Philadelphia. He became a star of the Metropolitan Opera, specializing in French and Italian operas. Ramsay Crooks
Ramsay Crooks (2 January 1787 – 6 June 1859) was an American fur trader who immigrated to Canada from Greenock, Scotland. He was the father of American Civil War Colonel William Crooks (colonel), William Crooks who served in the 6th Minnesota Regiment. In 1803 Ramsay worked in a trading post on the Great Lakes. He helped W. Price Hunt to organize and lead an overland trip to Astoria, Oregon, Astoria in the Oregon Country for John Jacob Astor in 1809 through 1813, as a partner in the Pacific Fur Company. He became general manager of the American Fur Company in 1817 and was president of the company from 1834–1839. While traveling for the fur trade company he dealt with many Native American tribes. He married Abanokue, the daughter of an Ojibwa Chieftain. They had a daughter together, Hester Crooks. Abanokue died around 1825. Crooks then married Emilie Pratte and had nine children. Paul Crooks is a former Formula One engineer. Crooks began his career as an apprentice aeronautical engineer when he was 17 at the Royal Aircraft Establishment based in Farnborough. He spent five years there before joining RAE at the age of 22. For the next five years he worked as a detail designer on aerospace projects, working alongside Frank Coppuck. From there, he got a job with Toleman Group Motorsport (later Benetton Formula, then Renault F1) as a detail designer. He worked under Rory Byrne for the next six years, before moving up to chief composite design engineer in 1983. In 1993, Crooks became Ligier's chief designer under Frank Dernie, but with the arrest of team boss Cyril de Rouvre, which sent the team into decline, Crooks joined Simtek. Mary Lynn Crooks, (born 1950) is an Australian feminist and public policy specialist. She has been the Executive Director of the Victorian Women's Trust since 1996. Early life Born in Camperdown, Victoria, Crooks grew up in Heywood in southwestern Victoria. She attended the University of Melbourne, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts. Career Crooks spent a number of years as a statutory appointment for the Victorian State Government, including the inaugural Chair of the Youth Policy Development Council and inaugural Chair of the Social Justice Consultative Council.
