Croatian Training Ship Andrija Mohorovičić
''Andrija Mohorovičić'' (pennant number BŠ-72) is a hydrographic survey ship used as a training vessel by the Croatian Navy ( hr, Hrvatska ratna mornarica – HRM). The ship was built by the Gdańsk Shipyard in 1971 for use by the Hydrographic Institute of the Yugoslav Navy. At the start of the Croatian War of Independence, the ship was captured by Croatian forces and commissioned in the HRM in 1993. Since then, the ship has been used as a training ship and a patrol boat of the Croatian Coast Guard. In 2015 ''Andrija Mohorovovičić'' deployed to southern Italy to participate in Operation Triton, rescuing immigrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea into the European Union. Andrija Mohorovičić
Andrija Mohorovičić (23 January 1857 – 18 December 1936) was a Croatian geophysicist. He is best known for the eponymous Mohorovičić discontinuity and is considered one of the founders of modern seismology. Early years Mohorovičić was born in Volosko, Opatija, where his father (also named Andrija), was a blacksmith, making anchors. The younger Andrija also loved the sea and married a captain's daughter, Silvija Vernić. They had four sons. Mohorovičić obtained his elementary education in his home town, then continued at the gymnasium of neighbouring Rijeka. He received his higher education in mathematics and physics at the Faculty of Philosophy in Prague in 1875, where one of his professors was Ernst Mach. ''Slobodna Dalmacija'' () is a Croatian daily newspaper published in Split. This is a list of active Croatian Navy ships. As of 2013, the Croatian Navy operates over 30 vessels including five missile boats which, along with three MOL coastal defence batteries, represent its main offensive capability. Due to constant reductions of the defence budget and the ongoing financial crisis, acquisition of new ships has proven to be problematic.
