Dode Criss
Dode Criss (March 12, 1885 β September 8, 1955) was a right-handed Major League Baseball pitcher and pinch hitter who played his entire career from 1908 to 1911 with the St. Louis Browns of the American League. He is considered by historian Bill James as the first player to be used as a pinch hitter regularly. Criss was born in Sherman, Mississippi. Criss started out in the Texas League where he was a key player for the Cleburne Railroaders championship team in 1906. On June 28 of that season, Criss pitched a no-hitter against the Temple Boll Weevils. Criss signed with the Browns in the beginning of the 1908 season, where his father told Criss not to sign for them for less than a dollar a day. In his first season on the big leagues, Criss became the first player to pinch hit at least 40 times in a season, with 41 out of 82 at-bats, making 12 pinch hits, (28 overall) for a .341 batting average, higher than the league leader, Ty Cobb. Sonny Criss
William "Sonny" Criss (23 October 1927 – 19 November 1977) was an American jazz musician. An alto saxophonist of prominence during the bebop era of jazz, he was one of many players influenced by Charlie Parker. Biography William Criss was born in Memphis, Tennessee, United States, and moved to Los Angeles at the age of 15. He then went on to play in various bands including Howard McGhee's, which also featured Charlie Parker. Criss had developed his own, concise, bluesy tone by this point, and though his basic style did not vary much, his ability on the instrument continued to develop. Nevertheless, he continued to drift from band to band, and played on some records with Johnny Otis and Billy Eckstine. George Peter John Criscuola (born December 20, 1945), better known by his stage name Peter Criss, is a retired American musician, best known as a co-founder, original drummer, and vocalist of the hard rock band Kiss (band), Kiss. Criss established The Catman character for his Kiss persona. In 2014, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Kiss. Early years Criss was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Loretta and Joseph Criscuola, who raised their five children (of whom Peter was the eldest) as Roman Catholics. Francis Hyman Criss (1901 - 1973) was an American painter. Criss's style is associated with the American Precisionists like Charles Demuth and his friend Charles Sheeler. Biography Criss was born in 1901 in London and immigrated with his family at age four. He attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1917 to 1921 on a scholarship, and later the Art Students League of New York and the Barnes Foundation, and he took private classes with Jan Matulka. In addition to doing work for the U.S. Government under the New Deal, and contributing a mural for the Williamsburg Housing Project in Brooklyn for the Federal Art Project, Criss taught at the leftist American Artists School in the 1930s. Fannie Criss (1866 β February 2, 1942) was a late 19th-century and 20th-century African-American designer who specialized in hand-made dress and gowns for elite patrons in Richmond, Virginia, and New York City, New York City, New York. Career Criss learned the art of dressmaking from her mother and later passed on her skills by offering a program in the Richmond area for young women to develop their sewing skills. She started as a seamstress who traveled home to home, as many did. Criss became the city's most celebrated designer in the early 1900s, charging up to $200 for her elegant, handmade dresses. Clair Carlton Criss (10 April 1879 β 9 March 1952) was an American businessman who developed the insurance company Mutual Benefit Health and Accident Association, later to become Mutual of Omaha. Under his leadership it grew from having 300 policyholders to become the largest company in the world that exclusively sold health and disability insurance. Early years Clair Carlton Criss was born and raised in Sac City, Iowa. He was born on 10 April 1879, son of James Lewis Criss (1846β1918) and Sevilla M. Wodell Criss (1853β1924). He was the oldest of four children. Mabel Leone Chambers (1881β1978) was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and moved several times. She went to high school in Pender, Thurston County, Nebraska.
