Crescent Arts Centre
The Crescent Arts Centre (or simply The Crescent) is an arts centre based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, founded in 1980. The centre hosts a wide range of arts and entertainment events, as well as classes in dance, music, verbal and visual arts, and community outreach programmes. Its facilities include a dance studio named after its late patron, the choreographer and Holocaust survivor Helen Lewis. The centre is home to the annual June Belfast Book Festival. The Crescent is housed in the former Victoria College on University Road in the Queens Conservation Area. The current patron of the centre is Paul Muldoon. Refurbishment The Victorian-era listed building was extensively refurbished between 2008 and 2010. In September 2008, then Minister of Culture Arts and Leisure, Gregory Campbell, announced the awarding of capital funding to allow refurbishment of the University Road site to get underway. Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast
A crescent shape (, ) is a symbol or emblem used to represent the lunar phase in the first quarter (the "sickle moon"), or by extension a symbol representing the Moon itself. In Hinduism, Lord Shiva is often shown wearing a crescent moon on his head symbolising that the lord is the master of time and is himself timeless. It is used as the astrological symbol for the Moon, and hence as the alchemical symbol for silver. It was also the emblem of Diana/Artemis, and hence represented virginity. In Christianity Marian veneration, it is associated with the Virgin Mary. Gregory Campbell (politician)
Gregory Lloyd Campbell (born 15 February 1953) is a British politician who has been the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) Member of Parliament (MP) for East Londonderry since 2001. He was previously a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for East Londonderry, from 1998 to 2016. In May 2021, Campbell was a candidate alongside Paula Bradley for the position as Deputy Leader of the DUP, following the resignation of the Nigel Dodds; he was unsuccessful in getting elected. Early life Campbell was born and raised in the Waterside area of Derry as an only child. He was educated at the city's technical college and at the University of Ulster. Political career He joined the DUP in the 1970s and was first elected to Londonderry City Council in 1981. Campbell briefly led the local DUP members out of the council in 1984 when it changed its name to Derry City Council, although he returned to his seat not long after.
