Cremona Society
The Cremona Society of London was founded in 1886 for the study of the violin and other stringed instruments. The name The Society was named after the Cremona region of Italy which had a long tradition of violin making, and from which some the greatest stringed instrument makers such as Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri had come. The name is not unique. There was a Berlin Cremona Society, a Boston Cremona Society, and the Bard Conservatory has a Cremona Society, open to those who loan or donate a violin to the Conservatory. Monthly meetings and transactions The society held monthly meetings from October to June. Membership was ten shillings and sixpence a year, half a guinea. Who's Who in Music and stated that the Society published the transactions annually. However, the British Library holds one volume (Volume One) of the Transactions, published in 1906, when the Society was twenty years old, so the amition of annual publishing had not been met. Guarneri
The Guarneri (, , ), often referred to in the Latinized form Guarnerius, is the family name of a group of distinguished luthiers from Cremona in Italy in the 17th and 18th centuries, whose standing is considered comparable to those of the Amati and Stradivari families. Family members * Andrea Guarneri ( 1626 – 7 December 1698) was an apprentice in the workshop of Nicolò Amati from 1641 to 1646 and returned to make violins for Amati from 1650 to 1654. His early instruments are generally based on the "Grand Amati" pattern but struggled to achieve the sophistication of Amati's own instruments. Andrea Guarneri produced some fine violas. The ex-Primrose Viola, which was played by William Primrose, bears Andrea's label but may have been made by his son Giuseppe. Pietro Guarneri
Pietro Guarnieri (14 April 1695 – 7 April 1762) was an Italian luthier. Sometimes referred to as ''Pietro da Venezia'', he was the son of Giuseppe Giovanni Battista Guarneri, ''filius Andreae'', and the last of the Guarneri house of violin-makers Guarnieri lived in Cremona with his father until 1717. Finding life in Casa Guarnieri in some way uncongenial, he left Cremona for good in 1717. The master arrived and settled in Venice 1717. Here he blended the Cremonese techniques of his father with Venetian, working with Comel, Gobbetti and Tononi. The Venetian makers of the same period were Matteo Goffriller, Carlo Annibale Tononi, Francesco Gobbetti, Domenico Montagnana and Sanctus Seraphin. Pietro Giovanni Guarneri
Pietro Giovanni Guarneri (1655–1720), also known as ''Pietro da Mantua'' or ''Peter Guarnerius of Mantua'' was a violin maker of the Guarneri family who also worked as a professional musician. Today his instruments are highly regarded, though quite rare. They are played by musicians such as Joseph Szigeti. Biography Pietro Guarneri was the eldest son of the master luthier Andrea Guarneri and Anna Maria di Orcelli, born in Cremona, Italy on the 18th of February 1655. Although the exact date he began working in his father's workshop is unknown, experts have found traces of his workmanship beginning about 1670 in instruments labeled as Andrea Guarneri. Tarisio Auctions is a web-based auction house that specializes in string instruments and bows. Founded in 1999 with locations in New York and London, it provides a service to clients around the world. Locations Tarisio's New York offices and gallery are at 244–250 W 54th Street (Manhattan), 54th Street, in the former workshop of the prominent French violin dealer and restorer Jacques Français. Français was joined in 1964 by the luthier René A. Morel, also a Frenchman, who later opened his own shop in the same space. Morel continued to work in collaboration with Tarisio until the summer of 2011, offering soundpost adjustments and other expert services. Horace Petherick
Horace William Petherick (1839-1919) was an artist and illustrator, a violin connoisseur, and a writer. As an artist, four of his works are in public collections in the UK; as an illustrator, he illustrated over 100 books, some of which are still in print, and his work can be found in digital collections at the British Library, the Osborne Collection of Early Children's Books, and the Baldwin Library of Historical Children's Literature; as a violin connoisseur, he owned both a Stradivarius and a del Gesù; and as an author, three of his books are still in print.
