Cranwell And Byard's Leap
Cranwell is a village in the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It is part of the civil parish of Cranwell and Byard's Leap and is situated approximately north-west from Sleaford and south-east from the city and county town of Lincoln. The principal through road, the B1429 between the A15 to the east and the A17 to the west, joins the village to RAF Cranwell. The appropriate civil parish is called Cranwell, Brauncewell and Byard's Leap with a population of 2,827 at the 2011 census. History During the medieval period the parish was originally governed as part of the ancient Flaxwell Wapentake in the North Kesteven division of Lincolnshire. The name Cranwell is thought to mean the spring or stream frequented by cranes or herons. The village centres on the remains of the village cross. Byard's Leap
Byard's Leap is a hamlet in the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated approximately west from Cranwell, and is part of the civil parish of Cranwell, Brauncewell and Byard's Leap. The hamlet is associated with various legends. Byard's Leap is associated with the activities of the Knights Templar, who perhaps held tournaments and jousts on the site. It lay at the southern end of their Temple Bruer military training ground. Legend The story, re-told by Ethel Rudkin, states there was a witch called Old Meg, an evil crone who plagued the local villagers from her cave or hut in a spinney near the turning to Sleaford on Ermine Street, here called High Dike. She was a bane of the countryside and caused the crops to whither. Cranwell Branch
The Cranwell branch was a military branch line railway in Lincolnshire, England. It connected the Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) at Cranwell to the main line at Sleaford. It opened in 1917 from Sleaford railway station and it joined the Great Northern Railway. RNAS Cranwell was intended for training pilots and aircrew during the First World War. Control soon passed to the Royal Air Force in 1918, and the location became known as RAF Cranwell. A public passenger service was operated from the outset, and there were three stations on the branch. Rood Screen
The rood screen (also choir screen, chancel screen, or jubé) is a common feature in late medieval church architecture. It is typically an ornate partition between the chancel and nave, of more or less open tracery constructed of wood, stone, or wrought iron.
