Craigmillar Preston
Craigmillar ( gd, Creag a' Mhuilleir, IPA: ˆkʰʲɾʲekˈaˈvɯʎɪɾʲ, from the Gaelic ''Creag Maol Ard'', meaning 'High Bare Rock', is an area of Edinburgh, Scotland, about south east of the city centre, with Duddingston to the north and Newcraighall to the east. History Despite the relative modernity of most of the housing in the area, the settlement of Craigmillar itself is very old, and contains Craigmillar Castle. The castle was originally the Barony of Preston, or Prestoun. Which was then renamed Gourtoun and then finally Craigmillar. Craigmillar begun in the late 14th or early 15th century, and occupied until the early 18th century. In 1660, the Craigmillar estate was bought by Sir John Gilmour. The housing scheme at Niddrie Mains was created through the Housing (Scotland) Act of 1924, with lands bought from the Wauchope Estate. Edinburgh East is a burgh constituency of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. In present form, the constituency was first used at the 2005 United Kingdom general election, 2005 general election, but there was also an Edinburgh East constituency in existence from 1885 to 1997. A grassroots movement is one that uses the people in a given district, region or community as the basis for a political or economic movement. The Gyle Shopping Centre
The Gyle Shopping Centre is located in the South Gyle area of Edinburgh, Scotland. The main centre has two anchor tenants, Marks & Spencer and Morrisons (formerly Safeway), at opposite ends of the shopping centre. Construction A new district shopping centre for West Edinburgh was proposed by a public inquiry in 1987. The findings of the West Edinburgh Inquiry of 1989 were approved by the then Secretary of State for Scotland. The floor space in the shopping centre, which was originally called Maybury Park, was later scaled down to 9,290 m2 (100,000 sq ft) to protect nearby retail areas, such as Wester Hailes and Corstorphine. The management contractor, Wimpey Construction, began work on The Gyle in April 1992, and it opened in October 1993. Davidsons Mains
Davidson's Mains is a former village and now a district in the north-west of Edinburgh, Scotland. It is adjacent to the districts of Barnton, Cramond, Silverknowes, Blackhall and Corbiehill/House O'Hill. It was absorbed into Edinburgh as part of the boundary changes in 1920 and is part of the EH4 postcode area. Locals sometimes abbreviate the name to D'Mains. Etymology The place is named after William Davidson, a wealthy merchant who bought Muirhouse, east of the district, in 1776. A mains is Lowland Scots for an estate farm or home farm. Prior to the 19th century, it was known as Muttonhole. Locals continued to use this name until at least 1860. Portobello is a coastal suburb of Edinburgh in eastern central Scotland.
