Cracroft, New Zealand
Cracroft is a south-west suburb of Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. Cracroft was named for John Cracroft Wilson, who settled in this part of Christchurch at the bottom of the Port Hills Range in 1854. The Cracroft Residents' Association started lobbying for Cracroft to become a suburb in 1993, and the New Zealand Geographic Board gazetted the suburb in 1999, splitting the area from Cashmere. Cracroft Caverns
Cracroft Caverns, also known as the Cashmere Caverns, are a series of large chambers in the hill of the Cashmere suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand. Constructed secretly during the Second World War in response to the Japanese threat, they were intended to house operational headquarters in the event of attack. The military commandeered the Cracroft Wilson estate, founded by Sir John Cracroft Wilson in 1854, for their Southern Group headquarters, and work on the tunnels began in 1942. Railways were built for access and for the removal of waste soil. The largest cavern was 7 metres high, 10 metres wide and 30 metres long. Prestressed concrete was used to line the caverns. Officers based in the estate house would come down stairs into the tunnels, while others were to enter through the access tunnels. Cracroft, British Columbia
Cracroft is a locality at the east end of Forward Bay on the south side of West Cracroft Island in the Johnstone Strait region of the Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada. The Cracroft post office and accompanying settlement was originally listed as being at the head of Port Harvey, at at the head of Port Harvey, but moved about 1/2 mile east prior to 1928, with the post office having opened in 1905. It was relocated to Forward Bay in 1951, with the post office closing later that same year. In 1961, there were 2 people residing at the original location of the Cracroft Bay Post Office, with 4 living there in 1976. Name origin The Cracroft Islands were named in 1861 by Captain Richards of for Sophia Cracroft, the niece of Sir John Franklin, the explorer. She accompanied Lady Jane Franklin on her round-the-world voyage, which brought them to British Columbia during the Fraser Gold Rush of 1858. West Cracroft Island is an island in the Johnstone Strait region of the Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada, located east of Port McNeill. It is the larger of the two Cracroft Islands, the other, East Cracroft Island, being so named to distinguish between the two islands, which at low tide are one island. Name origin The Cracroft Islands were named in 1861 by Captain Richards of for Sophia Cracroft, the niece of Sir John Franklin, the explorer. She accompanied Lady Jane Franklin on her round-the-world voyage, which brought them to British Columbia during the Fraser Gold Rush of 1858. They remained in British Columbia and explored its coast in 1861 before returning to England. East Cracroft Island
East Cracroft Island is an island in the Johnstone Strait region of the Central Coast region of British Columbia, Canada. It is the smaller of the two Cracroft Islands, and at low tide is really one island with its larger neighbour, West Cracroft Island. On the south side of the shallows that form an isthmus between them at low tide is Port Harvey, a short, wide inlet or bay. On its east shore is Keecekiltum Indian Reserve No. 2 (11.7 ha.), which is under the governance of the Tlowitsis Nation of the Kwakwaka'wakw peoples. at . The Cacroft Islands were named for Sophia Cracroft, niece of Sir John Franklin. She visited the British Columbia with Lady Franklin in 1861. Nearby Sophia Island is also named for her. The island is separated from the mainland on its northwest by Chatham Channel, which leads from Knight Inlet to the entrance to Call Inlet to the east.
