Crackers (1984 Film)
''Crackers'' is a 1984 American comedy crime film directed by Louis Malle. It was entered into the 34th Berlin International Film Festival. Written by Jeffrey Fiskin, the film is about a group of small-time out-of-luck thieves, led by the unemployed Weslake (Donald Sutherland), who attempt to rob the neighborhood pawn shop owned by the greedy Garvey (Jack Warden). It is a remake of the Italian film ''Big Deal on Madonna Street'' (1958) directed by Mario Monicelli. Plot In 1980s San Francisco, Weslake, who was laid off from his job, is working in a low-paying position at Garvey's pawn shop. Weslake has one friend nicknamed "Turtle" who is homeless and is seen throughout the whole film searching for something to eat. ''Big Deal on Madonna Street'' ( it, I soliti ignoti; released in the UK as ''Persons Unknown'') is a 1958 Italian comedy caper film directed by Mario Monicelli and considered to be among the masterpieces of Italian cinema. Its original Italian title literally translates as "the usual unknown ones", which is roughly equivalent to the English phrase "the usual suspects". The name of the Roman street in the English title is a slight mistranslation, as the Italian name of the fictional Roman street on which the midnight burglary in the film takes place is the ''Via delle Madonne'' (The Street of the Madonnas) rather than "Madonna Street". Trinidad Silva, Jr. (January 30, 1950 – July 31, 1988) was an American comedian and character actor who played small supporting roles in a number of films of the 1980s. He is best known for the roles of Jesus Martinez, a gang leader in the TV series ''Hill Street Blues''; Frog in the film ''Colors''; and Raul, the bizarre animal lover in "Weird" Al Yankovic's first film, '' UHF''.
