Covers (Placebo Album)
''Covers'' is a compilation album of covers by British alternative rock band Placebo. The album was originally released as a bonus disc with the special edition version of ''Sleeping with Ghosts'' on 22 September 2003 through Hut Records and Astralwerks, which has since gone out of print. "Running Up that Hill" is mostly responsible for this digital release package. After being used for the fourth-season premiere of ''The O.C.'', the song received much attention in both the U.S. and the UK, peaking at No. 44 on the UK Singles Chart. Release A vinyl LP version of the album was issued in 2003 with an all-gray cover and only the white name of the band on it (the 2010 LP reissue of the album has a red title). Most of the songs on the album were originally B-sides from the band's previous singles. Placebo (band)
Placebo are a British rock band, formed in London in 1994 by vocalist–guitarist Brian Molko and bassist–guitarist Stefan Olsdal. Drummer Robert Schultzberg joined in late 1994, but left in 1996 shortly after the release of the band's eponymous debut album due to conflicts with Molko, and was replaced the same year by Steve Hewitt. Following the release of a demo, a split single, and their eponymous debut album, Placebo gained exposure in 1997 after the single " Nancy Boy" became popular in the UK, a song notorious at the time for its gender-bending content. The band stood out amongst the Britpop scene they were associated with at the time for their androgynous appearance and musical content, and lyrics which openly discussed sexuality, mental health, and drug use. "This Picture" is a single by British alternative rock band Placebo, from their fourth studio album, ''Sleeping with Ghosts'', released on 9 June 2003. It was the second single off of the album. "This Picture" was remixed by Junior Sanchez for the bonus remix CD of '' Once More with Feeling''. Lyrics It tells the story of a relationship involving sadomasochism and an abusive female in a position of dominance. In the lyrics, the phrase "ashtray girl" is meant to refer to a woman who uses her partner as an "emotional ashtray"; "cigarette burns on my chest" makes reference to a supposed particular fetish of James Dean. Marc Bolan
Marc Bolan ( ; born Mark Feld; 30 September 1947 – 16 September 1977) was an English guitarist, singer and songwriter. He was a pioneer of the glam rock movement in the early 1970s with his band T. Rex. Bolan was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 as a member of T. Rex. In the late 1960s, he rose to fame as the founder and leader of the psychedelic folk band Tyrannosaurus Rex, with whom he released four critically acclaimed albums and had one minor hit "Debora". Bolan had started as an acoustic singer-writer before heading into electric music prior to the recording of T. "20th Century Boy" is a song by T. Rex, written by Marc Bolan, released as a stand-alone single on 2 March 1973. It entered in the UK Singles Chart at number 3, on 10 March 1973 and peaked three weeks in a row at that position. It stayed a total of nine weeks in the UK Chart. "20th Century Boy" was not featured on the album ''Tanx'', released at the same time in early March. "Taste in Men" is a 2000 single by the English alternative rock band Placebo. Taken from their third album, '' Black Market Music'', it reached number 16 in the UK singles chart. Music and reception Gigwise ranked the track as Placebo's greatest hit, describing it as "bubbling, space-age blast of howling, claustrophobic electro-rock." Nevertheless, Pitchfork considered the song as a "lazy reprise the Roland 303 industrial funk of ' Pure Morning'." The Smiths
