A coup d'état (; French for 'stroke of state'), also known as a coup or overthrow, is a seizure and removal of a government and its powers. Typically, it is an illegal seizure of power by a political faction, politician, cult, rebel group, military, or a dictator. Many scholars consider a coup successful when the usurpers seize and hold power for at least seven days. Etymology The term comes from French ''coup d'État'', literally meaning a 'stroke of state' or 'blow of state'. In French, the word ''État'' () is capitalized when it denotes a sovereign political entity. ''Dear Dictator'' is a 2018 American satire comedy film written and directed by Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse. The film stars Michael Caine, Katie Holmes, Odeya Rush, Seth Green, and Jason Biggs. The plot follows a sixteen-year-old American girl who becomes the pen pal of a notorious island nation dictator even when he is deposed. Coup D'etat (band)
Coup D'Etat was a New Zealand band active between 1980 and 1982. Members included Harry Lyon, previously (and subsequently) of Hello Sailor, Jan Preston and Neil Hannan of Red Mole, and drummer Paul Dunningham. Originally, Preston and Hannan were members of the band Wolfgang with drummer Steve Osborne. Harry Lyon joined the band, which was then re-named Coup D'Etat. History The band is best known for their New Zealand top ten hit "Doctor I Like Your Medicine" (written and sung by Lyon), which won Single of the Year at the 1981 New Zealand Music Awards. Neither their first single "No Music On My Radio" (sung by Preston), nor later single "Permanent Hire" (sung by Lyon) equalled the success of "Doctor I Like Your Medicine". ''Coup d'Etat'' is the third studio album released by punk rock band The Plasmatics in 1982. Background In 1982, a deal was signed with Capitol Records and Dan Hartman offered to produce a demo of the album for Capitol with Rod Swenson at Electric Lady Studios, Jimi Hendrix's old studio, in New York. A demo was arranged, recorded and mixed within a week, but not released. It would be released 20 years later as '' Coup de Grace''. Muslimgauze was the main musical project of Bryn Jones (17 June 1961 – 14 January 1999), a British ethnic electronica and experimental musician who was influenced by conflicts and history in the Muslim world, often with an emphasis on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
