A county highway (also county road or county route; usually abbreviated CH or CR) is a road in the United States and in the Canadian province of Ontario that is designated and/or maintained by the county highway department. Route numbering can be determined by each county alone, by mutual agreement among counties, or by a statewide pattern. Any county-maintained road, whether or not it is given a signed number, can be called a county road. Depending on the state or province and county, these roads can be named after geographic features, communities, or people. Lenox is a town in Madison County, New York, United States. The population was 9,112 as of the 2010 census. The Town of Lenox is on the county's northern border. It is west of the City of Oneida. History The first settlement began ''circa'' 1792. The town was formed in 1809 from the Town of Sullivan. Some novels of Walter D. New York State Route 316 (NY 316) is a state highway in Madison County, New York, in the United States. It extends for in a northwest–southeast direction from an intersection with NY 46 in the city of Oneida to a junction with NY 31 in the hamlet of Oneida Valley, located in the town of Lenox. NY 316 serves as a connector between Oneida Lake and the city of Oneida, and it parallels Oneida Creek for its entire length. The route was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York, following what had previously been part of NY 31 during the 1920s. The Village of Wampsville is in the northern part of the county and near the eastern town line of Lenox. Cazenovia is an incorporated town in Madison County, New York. The population was 6,740 at the time of the 2020 census. The town is named after Theophile Cazenove, the ''Agent General'' of the Holland Land Company. The Town of Cazenovia has a village also named Cazenovia. The town is on the county's western border.
