A county highway (also county road or county route; usually abbreviated CH or CR) is a road in the United States and in the Canadian province of Ontario that is designated and/or maintained by the county highway department. Route numbering can be determined by each county alone, by mutual agreement among counties, or by a statewide pattern. Any county-maintained road, whether or not it is given a signed number, can be called a county road. Depending on the state or province and county, these roads can be named after geographic features, communities, or people. Big Flats is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 7,822 at the 2020 census. The town is on the western border of the county, west of Elmira. It is part of the Elmira Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town contains a hamlet also named Big Flats. History The town of Big Flats, which had formerly been called "Great Plains", was organized in 1822 from the town of Elmira. The Warren E. Eaton Motorless Flight Facility was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, Big Flats has a total area of , of which is land and , or 1.29%, is water. A reference route is an unsigned highway assigned by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to roads that possess a signed name (mainly parkways), that NYSDOT has determined are too minor to have a signed touring route number, or are former touring routes that are still state-maintained. The majority of reference routes are owned by the state of New York and maintained by NYSDOT; however, some exceptions exist. The reference route designations are normally posted on reference markers, small green signs located every tenth-mile on the side of the road, though a few exceptions exist to this practice as well. Reference route numbers are always three digit numbers in the 900s with a single alphabetic suffix. The designations are largely assigned in numerical and alphabetical order within a region, and designations are not reused once they are removed. New York State Route 225 (NY 225) is a state highway in the Southern Tier of New York in the United States. It is a loop route off NY 352 that connects the town of Big Flats (near the city of Elmira) and the city of Corning to the hamlet of Caton. The route begins in Big Flats and follows a generally east–west alignment across rural areas to Caton, where it turns to run in a north–south direction toward Corning. Development along the highway increases once it enters the Corning suburb of South Corning, and the rest of the route serves residential neighborhoods in South Corning and Corning. NY 225 is two lanes wide for its entire length; however, part of the highway in South Corning also has a center turn lane. Millport, New York
Millport is a village in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 312 at the 2010 census. The name comes from its former status as a canal port. Millport is in the northwest quadrant of the town of Veteran and is north of Elmira. The mail ZIP code is 14864. It is part of the Elmira Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The Sullivan Expedition of 1779 passed through the area. The town's first settler, Green Bently, purchased and developed farmland on the site of the village in 1798. The community was once known as "Millvale" after the village was laid out in 1825. The name was changed to "Millport" in 1829 to recognize its new status by the Chemung Canal which passed by the village. The presence of the canal helped raise the population about 1,000 for a time.
