County Road 78 (Hendry County, Florida)
State Road 78 (SR 78) is the Florida Department of Transportation designation of the highway that historically extended from Pine Island Center, Florida, Pine Island Center on the Gulf of Mexico, Gulf Coast of Florida to the northern tip of Lake Okeechobee. In the 1980s, two segments of the route were removed from state maintenance to county maintenance (and the road designations were changed to reflect the action). More recently, SR 78 signs were removed from the four-mile-long stretch of U.S. Route 27 (Florida), US 27/State Road 25 (Florida), SR 25 that was once a concurrency (road), concurrency. All three sections are signed east–west, even though the easternmost section is actually a north–south route. Matlacha Bridge
The Matlacha Pass Bridge (pronounced "Mat-La-Shay") is a small single-leaf drawbridge located in Matlacha, Florida. It carries County Road 78 (Pine Island Road) over Matlacha Pass, connecting Pine Island with the mainland in Cape Coral. The first bridge spanning Matlacha Pass was a small wooden swing bridge. The first bridge's swing span was a recycled span that had previously been used on the Alva Bridge. The first bridge was built largely in part to the influence of Pine Island resident Harry Stringfellow, who served as a county commissioner from 1926 to 1953. The first bridge was replaced with a concrete bascule bridge in 1968. The bridge became a very popular fishing spot for local residents, and was nicknamed "The fishingest bridge in the world". History In the mid-1970s, the Florida Department of Transportation (formerly the State Road Department) started a sequence of events that eventually resulted in the transferral of hundred of miles of roadway from State of Florida maintenance to county control. The first step was the addition of an "S-" or "C-" prefix onto the original FDOT designation ("S" represented "secondary"; "C" represented "county"). In 1977, House Bill 803, Chapter 77-165 in the ''Laws of Florida'', was passed in the Florida Legislature. This transportation policy act eliminated the State Highway Secondary System which consisted of county roads that were maintained by the state. The provisions went into effect on July 1, 1977. State Road signs started disappearing from the "C" roads and were replaced by ''Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices'' (MUTCD) compliant county road signs in the early 1980s; the transition of "S" roads to county control took a bit longer. Pine Island (Lee County, Florida)
Pine Island is the largest island on the Gulf Coast of peninsular Florida in the United States. Located in Lee County, on the Gulf of Mexico coast of southwest Florida, it is also the 118th largest island in the United States. The Intracoastal Waterway passes through Pine Island Sound, to the west of the island. Matlacha Pass runs between Pine Island and the mainland. Pine Island lies west of Cape Coral. Bokeelia, Florida
Bokeelia is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) located on Pine Island in Lee County, Florida, United States. As of the 2020 census, the CDP had a population of 1,855, up from 1,780 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bokeelia is still home to one of Lee County's first pioneer families, the Padillas, who came by way of Cayo Costa. Geography Bokeelia is located in western Lee County at (26.687960, -82.145249). Billy Bowlegs
Holata Micco (alternate spellings: Halpatter-Micco, Halbutta Micco, and Halpuda Mikko, meaning Alligator Chief; known by whites as Chief Billy Bowlegs or Billy Bolek) (c. 1810 – 1859) was an important leader of the Seminoles in Florida during the Second Seminole War and was the remaining Seminole's most prominent chief during the Third Seminole War, when he led the Seminoles' last major resistance against the United States government. With the possibilities of military victory dwindling and facing starvation, he finally agreed to relocate with his people to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) in 1858. He is buried in Hughes County, Oklahoma. The Seminole are a Native American people who developed in Florida in the 18th century. Charlotte County is a U.S. county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 186,847. Its county seat is Punta Gorda.
