''Counter-Strike'' (''CS'') is a series of multiplayer tactical first-person shooter video games in which teams of terrorists battle to perpetrate an act of terror (bombing, hostage-taking, assassination) while counter-terrorists try to prevent it (bomb defusal, hostage rescue, escort mission). The series began on Windows in 1999 with the release of the first game, ''Counter-Strike''. It was initially released as a modification ("mod") for ''Half-Life'' that was designed by Minh "Gooseman" Le and Jess "Cliffe" Cliffe before the rights to the mod's intellectual property were acquired by Valve, the developers of ''Half-Life'', who then turned ''Counter-Strike'' into a retail product released in 2000. ''Counter-Strike'' (also known as ''Half-Life: Counter-Strike'' or ''Counter-Strike 1.6'') is a tactical first-person shooter game developed by Valve. It was initially developed and released as a ''Half-Life'' modification by Minh "Gooseman" Le and Jess Cliffe in 1999, before Le and Cliffe were hired and the game's intellectual property acquired. ''Counter-Strike'' was released by Valve for Microsoft Windows in 2000, and is the first installment in the ''Counter-Strike'' series. Several remakes and ports were released on Xbox, as well as OS X and Linux. Set in various locations around the globe, players assume the roles of counter-terrorist forces and terrorist militants opposing them. During each round of gameplay, the two teams are tasked with defeating the other by the means of either achieving the map's objectives or eliminating all of the enemy combatants. ''Counter-Strike: Condition Zero'' is a first-person shooter video game developed by Ritual Entertainment, Turtle Rock Studios, and Valve, and published by Sierra Entertainment and Valve. The follow-up to '' Counter-Strike'' (2000), it was released in March 2004 for Windows. ''Condition Zero'' utilizes the GoldSrc engine and has a multiplayer mode, which features updated character models, textures, maps and other graphical tweaks. It also includes two single-player campaigns; ''Tour of Duty'' and ''Condition Zero: Deleted Scenes''. Alongside various other Valve titles, the game received versions for OS X and Linux in 2013. ''Counter-Strike: Global Offensive'' (''CS:GO'') is a 2012 Multiplayer video game, multiplayer Tactical shooter, tactical first-person shooter developed by Valve Corporation, Valve and Hidden Path Entertainment. It is the fourth game in the Counter-Strike, ''Counter-Strike'' series. Developed for over two years, ''Global Offensive'' was released for OS X, PlayStation 3, Windows, and Xbox 360 in August 2012, and for Linux in 2014. Valve still regularly updates the game, both with smaller balancing patches and larger content additions. The game pits two teams, Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists, against each other in different objective-based game modes. The most common game modes involve the Terrorists planting a bomb while Counter-Terrorists attempt to stop them, or Counter-Terrorists attempting to rescue hostages that the Terrorists have captured.
