Counter Investigation (1930 Film)
''Counter Investigation'' (French: ''Contre-enquête'') is 1930 crime film directed by John Daumery and starring Daniel Mendaille, Suzy Vernon and Jeanne Helbling. It was made by Warner Brothers as the French-language version of their film ''Those Who Dance''. Such Multiple-language versions were common during the early years of sound before dubbing became more widespread. John Daumery
Jean Daumery (1898-1934) was a Belgian-born film director. Jean (John) Daumery is the pseudonym of Jean Nicolas Pierre Ysaÿe. He was born in Brussels (Belgium) on 17 May 1898. He was the son of the pianist and composer Théo Ysaÿe and the actress Carrie Mess, better known as Carrie Daumery. His uncle was the famous violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. In the First World War, Jean Ysaÿe was a soldier who shot films for the Belgian army behind the front. During this work he had inhaled poison gas from which he died in Lausanne (Switzerland) on 3 May 1934. Two months before his death, he married Béatrice Henriette Potter. As a film director he worked in Paris and London for Warner Bros. First National. Vitaphone
Vitaphone was a sound film system used for feature films and nearly 1,000 short subjects made by Warner Bros. and its sister studio First National from 1926 to 1931. Vitaphone was the last major analog sound-on-disc system and the only one that was widely used and commercially successful. The soundtrack was not printed on the film itself, but issued separately on phonograph records. The discs, recorded at rpm (a speed first used for this system) and typically in diameter, would be played on a turntable physically coupled to the projector motor while the film was being projected. It had a frequency response of 4300 Hz. Many early talkies, such as ''The Jazz Singer'' (1927), used the Vitaphone system. The name "Vitaphone" derived from the Latin and Greek words, respectively, for "living" and "sound". Reverend Lewis Page Mercier (9 January 1820 – 2 November 1875) is known today as the translator, along with Eleanor Elizabeth King, of three of the best-known novels of Jules Verne: ''Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Seas'', ''From the Earth to the Moon'', and ''Around the Moon''.
