The Council of Constantinople of 843 or the Synod of Constantinople of 843 was a local council (as opposed to an ecumenical council) of Christians, Christian bishops that was convened in Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul, Turkey) in AD 843 by the Byzantine Empire, Byzantine regent Theodora (wife of Theophilos), Theodora. This council, convened to refute iconoclasm, is still celebrated on the first Sunday of Great Lent in the Eastern Orthodox Church, as decreed by the council. Attendees under the presidency of Patriarch Methodios I of Constantinople, Methodios I met on 11 March 843 and symbolically processed from the Church of St. Mary of Blachernae, Church Blachernae to the Hagia Sophia, Church of Hagia Sophia bearing and icon of the Theotokos, Mother of God. Theoktistos
Theoktistos or Theoctistus (; died November 20, 855) was a leading Byzantine official during the second quarter of the 9th century and the ''de facto'' head of the regency for the underage emperor Michael III from 842 until his dismissal and murder in 855. A eunuch courtier, he assisted in the ascent of Michael II to the throne in 822, and was rewarded with the titles of ''patrikios'' and later ''magistros''. He held the high posts of ''chartoularios tou kanikleiou'' and '' logothetēs tou dromou'' under Michael and his son Theophilos. Theophilos ( gr, Θεόφιλος; sometimes Latinized or Anglicized as Theophilus or Theophilo; c. 812 20 January 842) was the Byzantine Emperor from 829 until his death in 842. Leo V the Armenian ( gr, Λέων ὁ ἐξ Ἀρμενίας, ''Leōn ho ex Armenias''; 775 – 25 December 820) was the Byzantine emperor from 813 to 820. A senior general, he forced his predecessor, Michael I Rangabe, to abdicate and assumed the throne.
