Irwin Cotler
Irwin Cotler, PC, OC, OQ (born May 8, 1940) is a retired Canadian politician who was Member of Parliament for Mount Royal from 1999 to 2015. He served as the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada from 2003 until the Liberal government of Paul Martin lost power following the 2006 federal election. He was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada in a by-election in November 1999, winning 92% of votes cast. Early life The son of a lawyer, Cotler was born in Montreal, Quebec. Cotler received his B.A. (1961) and BCL (1964) degree from McGill University and was an editor of the ''McGill Law Journal''. He then graduated from Yale Law School with an LL.M. For a short period, he worked with federal Minister of Justice John Turner. Cotler was a professor of law at McGill University and the director of its Human Rights Program from 1973 until his election as a Member of Parliament in 1999 for the Liberal Party of Canada. Theodore Zachary Cotler (born 1981) is an American filmmaker, poet, and novelist. His first film, ''Maya Dardel'', premiered in the Narrative Competition at the 2017 South by Southwest Film Festival and was acquired by Samuel Goldwyn Films and Orion Pictures. His second film, '' The Wall of Mexico'', premiered at South by Southwest in 2019. A third film, '' When I'm a Moth'', came out shortly after the second. He won the 2012 Sawtooth Poetry Prize for ''Sonnets to the Humans'' and the 2104 Colorado Prize for Poetry for ''Supplice''. In 2011, the Poetry Foundation awarded him the Ruth Lilly Fellowship. Lori Cotler, known artistically as Loire, is an United States, American rhythm vocalist, composer, recording artist, educator, and music therapist known for her Konnakol, scat singing, world music vocal stylings, ethno jazz interpretations, and film score vocals. Early life Cotler was born in New York City and raised in Roslyn Estates, New York. She began studying piano at age six and was writing instrumental by age ten. At age eleven, she was inspired to become a vocalist after a chance encounter with Cuban percussionist Cándido Camero at her brother's bar mitzvah. Loire sang and played keyboard in rock bands throughout her teenage years. Her band Kizmit featured her original music, although plans to record a studio album were shelved when she decided to pursue a career in scat singing. Douglas Norman Cotler (born October 2, 1949) is a Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter and composer based in Los Angeles, California. Cotler tours the United States sharing his music with Jewish communities. Cotler's composed the symphony, ''The Golem,'' which was performed by Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra. He performs country, pop and rock music with artists such as John Denver, Jerry Jeff Walker and Mason Williams. He recorded five original Jewish music albums. Kami Cotler (born June 17, 1965) is an American actress and educator. She is best known for her role as young Elizabeth Walton, which she played in the series ''The Waltons'', and the television film ''The Homecoming: A Christmas Story'' (1971) which inspired it, as well as a number of later ''Waltons'' reunion productions. Biography Cotler reduced her acting roles while she attended the University of California, Berkeley, earning a degree in Social Sciences.
