Omar Hayssam ( ar, عمر هيثم, born January 3, 1963) is a Syrian-born Romanian financier who was sentenced ''in absentia'' to 20 years in prison after a Romanian court found him guilty of masterminding the kidnapping of three Romanian journalists in Iraq in 2005. Early life Hayssam arrived in Bucharest as a student at the beginning of the 1980s, graduating from the Railroads, Roads and Bridges Faculty of the Bucharest Constructions Institute. In criminal law, kidnapping is the unlawful confinement of a person against their will, often including transportation/asportation.
