Correctional Reception Center
The Correctional Reception Center is a state prison for men located in Orient, Pickaway County, Ohio, opened in 1987, owned and operated by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. The facility holds a maximum of 1500 inmates at various security levels. The prison is immediately adjacent to the state's Pickaway Correctional Institution. Orient is a former village (United States)#Ohio, village in Pickaway County, Ohio, United States. The population was 270 at the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census. Orient is home to the Pickaway Correctional Institution and the Correctional Reception Center. History Orient was established as a station on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in the northwest corner of Scioto township. Local residents began seeking dissolution in January 2012. Thirty-three signatures were collected, one more than required by Ohio law to gain ballot access, but the county board of elections rejected the petition when it was found to have more signatures than those certified by the petition circulator. A new petition resulted in a May 2013 vote, in which the village residents supported dissolution by a margin of 38–30. Geography Orient is located at (39.804906, -83.154567). Pickaway County is a county in the U.S. state of Ohio. As of the 2020 census, the population was 58,539. Its county seat is Circleville. Its name derives from the Pekowi band of Shawnee Indians, who inhabited the area. (See List of Ohio county name etymologies.) Pickaway County is part of the Columbus, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The future state of Ohio was part of the Northwest Territory, created in 1787. Pickaway Correctional Institution
The Pickaway Correctional Institution is a state prison located in Scioto Township, Pickaway County, just outside Orient, Ohio, United States which mostly houses minimum and medium security inmates. PCI was opened as a prison in 1984 after the buildings which formerly housed a facility for Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities had been closed. Although the structures were not built to house prisoners, Warden James Jackson modified the condemned buildings into secure housing for inmates. The prison houses 2107 inmates and 511 staff members (out of which 249 are the security staff). Inmates have an opportunity to take classes at Sinclair Community College or learn the printing trade at the OPI Print Shop. Ariel Castro
Between 2002 and 2004, Ariel Castro kidnapped Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Georgina "Gina" DeJesus from the streets of Cleveland, Ohio and later held them captive in his home of 2207 Seymour Avenue in the city's Tremont, Cleveland, Tremont neighborhood. All three girls were imprisoned at Castro's home until 2013, when Berry successfully escaped with her six-year-old daughter, to whom she had given birth while imprisoned, and contacted the police. Police rescued Knight and DeJesus, and arrested Castro hours later. Castro was charged with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. He pleaded guilty to 937 criminal counts of rape, kidnapping and Aggravation (law), aggravated murder as part of a plea bargain. He was sentenced to life imprisonment plus 1,000 years in prison without the possibility of parole.
