The Corps of Mining Engineers was a militarized organization founded in Imperial Russia on 1 January 1834 to manage mining and oil extraction. Yegor Kankrin, the Minister of Finance was the first head of the organization, with Major General Konstantin Chevkin acting as Chief of staff. Yegor Kankrin
Count Georg Ludwig Cancrin (russian: Егор Францевич Канкрин, tr=Egor Francevič Knkrin; 16 November 1774 – 10 September 1845) was a Russian German aristocrat and as a politician best known for spearheading reforms in the Russian financial system early in the 19th century. Biography Cancrin was born in Hanau. In 1797, at the age of 23, Cancrin accompanied his father, the mineralogist Franz Ludwig von Cancrin, to Russia, joining the imperial service and changing his name to Georg. In 1823, at the age of 49, Cancrin was appointed Minister of Finance and held that office for 21 years. As a politician, Cancrin was a conservative who opposed the construction of railways and the emancipation of the serfs. Cancrin died in Pavlovsk. Legacy In 1827, Cancrin wrote Alexander von Humboldt, the famous Prussian scientist, asking if he would visit Russia at the monarchy's expense to identify areas where Russia could develop economically. Konstantin Chevkin
Konstantin Vladimirovitch Chevkin (1802–1875) was Minister of Transport in Imperial Russia (1855–1862). Chevkin served in the Imperial Russian Army fighting in the Russo-Persian War (1826–1828) and Russo-Turkish War (1828–1829). He also participated in the defeat of the Polish November Uprising. He then was sent on diplomatic missions to France and Germany. Reaching the rank of Major General, Chevkin was appointed Chief of Staff of the Corps of Mining Engineers in 1834. Ernst Reinhold von Hofmann ( rus, Эрнст Ка́рлович Го́фман, Ernst Karlovich Hofmann, 8 January 1801 – 23 May 1871) was a Russians, Russian geologist, geographer, explorer, and lecturer. He was a geologist who accompanied Otto von Kotzebue and his crew during his travels around the world from 1823 to 1826.Andreas W.
